Nov. 2012 , Hurricane Sandy moves in and devastates everything in its path, and my white bus was not spared from its path, I had just done the breaks on it Saturday (the storm was on a Monday) and I could not get the air out of the lines (bad master cylinder I guess), So i did the best I could, which turned out to be not enough, I jacked it up on jack stands and went inside to weather the storm, long story short the tide moved in and the bus took water to the belt line, so the next day with no electric, heat or hot water, and my tools all fucked, i did the best I could to give it a chance for a later day, I knew the motor and tranny were fucked from a previous salt bath my motor and tranny stash took the year before, so I skipped those two and went for what I knew would need more help , the body and the underside of the bus, so I ripped the interior and took the water hose to it in and out for about two hours.
The bus sat at The108 untouched until September last year when we moved out of there and then I moved it to my office's parking lot, I took the motor out of it and it sat there in jack stands there until a few days ago when I started digging into again.

I stopped taking pictures before the water made it to the belt line because it was a little depressing to see what was happening right in front of your eyes

Tranny out, tranny in...I've been cleaning and degreasing everything back there, but as it turned out, all that caked up shit that I was always made fun of for not cleaning, save a lot of the metal.

Gas Tank got the treatment too, I took it to my local Radiator guy, he dipped the inside, pressure tested it and coated it, all for a few bucks, he even power washed the outside for me.

Today I ripped into the old motor to get a few pieces for the new motor I'm building, and I was actually surprised that only 2 sheet metal screws fought me.

The bus is now on the ground on all four, and if all goes well, I should have it running in a about two weeks. I've been doing a little bit here and there after work and on weekends, and slowly but surely, it's taking shape again.

That's a lotta work right there. I can't believe that engine wasn't harder to dismantle, good deal. Is your wiring ok?

Yeah Id be mortified if I saw the evil salt water rolling in. Is there a plan to get it to high ground should the evil salt water try again? Jackstands maybe? Build ramps, drive it up on ramps.

it's only been mechanical work, the kind of stuff we would do to bring back and old bus after sitting for years, the only difference here is that this was my running bus one day and the next day it was as if was abandoned for decades.
The distributor cap was actually clean inside and out with no signs of oxidation, the distributor itself was spinning freely, and the shaft was nice and oily when I pulled it out, I'm just gonna take it apart and clean the inside. Or I should say, I'm gonna give it to Glenn to do it for me. the wiring I'm waiting to see when I get to it, I might just put a new wiring harness while I'm at it.

I don't live there anymore, I moved about two miles further inland since, if the water ever reaches there, it would probably be a 100 foot wave sweeping the entire east coast, at which point the bus would be the least of my worries

here's a couple of pics of the distributor for you swinger, I'm gonna have your boy Glenn Ring clean the insides for a second time and use the same cap and wires just to prove that they survived intact.

Why thanks John, since you like the tank so much I give you the gas tank tour first. I got it all dressed up for the grand installation later on

I also finished tearing down the motor , nothing to save other than a bunch of sheet metal screws, motor is frozen solid, but everything came out real easy, including the pulley.

Great work getting it back into shape.
Did you power wash all of the salt out of the nooks an crannies in the body? I imagine a nice salt bath could kill a bus pretty quick.

so far I haven't seen much new rust come out, there was rust in a lot of areas before the storm, but I havent seen anything new pop up and even the old rust seems to be staying put. I washed everywhere I could then, and as I'm going along now, I'm power washing and POR15ing as much as I can, eventually I have to change inner and outters again, I replaced them 11 years ago and I didn't undercoat that bare metal until about a year later (don't ask why) and by the time I got to it the metal had a nice layer of surface rust, well now they're starting to rot out again. the lower nose never got replaced then and now it's in real bad shape, so those are areas I wanna address once I get the bus running again.
