|
|
Hi folks, thought I would share with you the rebuild of the engine for my 1952 split project (promise to open a post on the reconstruction of the car).
My good friend Nico should take the credit for all the work. I sent him the engine from Barcelona (Spain) to Vinkeveen (NL) (this is close to 2000km!!) to get all the work done, and I am very please with the results.
The idea was to get a simple and reliable engine with a few extra (not too many) ponies that will allow me to drive any distance:
- double 26 carb with home made manifolds
- okrasa cam
- framm oil filter
- abarth exhaust
- etc
This is what Nico started with, a well abused 60 years old engine which is the one my split left the factory with. As you can see in the pics it had a tone of sh... inside

Some more pics...
Test fitting everything before sanding all the tins.
Please note the home made manifolds as well as the custom-built linkage system, all built by Nico
The 28 carbs and 36hp fuel pump are just for testing purposes

Just wondering if your linkage is going to have any issues. I would think that running the connection point off of the heat risers will cause some expansion issues, thus throwing your carbs out of sync. Have you seen a system like this in the past that was used with great success? _________________ 59 Kombi

This is a very good point. Nico has used this system several time with no issues, but will only be able to test it by myself once it is installed on the car.
I have a spare linkage system from a Richter kit just in case

forgive my ignorance but are the top cylinder tins shown 36hp? |
I am not an expert either but to the best of my knowledge the later 25hp also had the 1 piece cylinder tins, but maybe I am wrong. I am sure someone in this forum will know for sure when the change took place.
I know the seamed fan shroud was discontinued in march or april 52, so that should be correct in my engine (which is from May). Again, if I am wrong please let me know _________________ 50 11A

looks good, just wondering if its a later case tho, the oil filler has the threaded hole to hold it on. _________________ shiny paint doesnt make it worth any more |

Love it. A home made set of duals has been on my list for a while now. I like your solution. I would love to get some of those filters as the Low Light Ghia has clearance issues with taller manifolds, contacting the hinges. Are they the Porsche Mushrooms? |

ruvwen,
Very Nice.......gotta love the early motors. Glad the fuel pump got changed....just need to shift that "D" regulator so she sits straight. Look at your before and after photos......You'll see it. Really like the carb set up....I was going to go that route, but went 28's instead. Curious to hear how she runs with those carbs and the exhaust combo. Thanks for posting the photos and project. Can't get enough! What is the motor going in? _________________ " Southern Comfort Vintage Volks "

The linkage and the way it connects to the pre-heat tubes is sweet. |
Thanks Everett

These are mushroom VW items as used on some early splits as well as in some industrial engines. They are relatively easy to find, and get published here on the Classifieds section regularly for 150-200eur per piece
I am actually thinking on switching to cyclone air filters, as I am in love with these type of filters and think they are perfect for a dual carb split engine set up. I already have 1 cyclone filter and am currently searching for the second one

thanks for the feedback.
The engine will go into my may 52 split. Almost finished with the metal work after more than 350hours!! I saved the car from being scrapped by only a few hours, but they had already started chopping some parts of it
It belongs to the very first batch of VW that was officially imported into Spain, so it is a very nice car to have for a Spanish VW freak
