This may not be truly Thing, but my broken thing crankshaft is there.
I was gouing to take my 73 TYhingster on the Mojave Road last weekend, but the engine blow-up stopped ot.
I had two options, put my good 1600 DP motor from my 63 singlecab, into the Thingster , or take my 63 singlecab.
Well I decided to take my 63 singlecab.
I drove 530 miles to the start at Laughlin NV from Cupertino, did about 100 miles in the dirt, camped, then wimped out and came home on day two.
I did have a overheating problem driving in 100+ heat and had to slow to 50 MPH.
Here is a 6 minute video I put together.

Great Video Sam! I was wondering if that was or your brakes whistling . Pretty bold driving with a single master cylinder.

Technically the rock carvings are Petroglyphs, not Hieroglyphs. but,.....semantic, shemantic. At least that what we call them here in the colonies Laughing

Bold indeed! But nice to see someone enjoying their old VW. If I had a single cab that looked as good as yours does the only off road action it would ever see would be my gravel driveway Smile

My Thingster, with the 3 1/2 " lift in the front & 31x10.5 tyres in the back would have had no problemo. But I really had fun. Nothing broke, and my Harbor Freight Racing trolley jack was used by lots of people.
Here my downhill crawl looks much scarier.

You're the Man, Sam!! I am not a big bus/truck guy....... BUT, I do love a split single cab...

I know you'll have some folks cringing and sending you nasty messages for that off-road trek....
Good on you, for doing what You want with your rides!!! Cool

Beautiful truck, by the way!!

All the respect to you and your adventurous spirit!! Your annual Kubeltreffen trek is awesome! Hope to meet up, someday! Let me know if you're ever passing through E.Tn!

hey Sam,

Thank you for sharing the video, i'd love to do that trip someday!

Well, I can see the need for a singlecab on that trip, you'd be the wagon! maybe you can jack up the single cab! Very Happy

PS: how's it going with the THING?

The lifted Thing is much better off road.
The damage I did was insignificant,
Exhaust donut needs replacing
Dinged muffler
Horn wire scraped off.

But the motor is coming together.
The bottom end is assembled, waiting for the heads with the correct combustion chamber volume.
I will pick up the fancy A-1 Thing exhaust later this week on my trip to OCTO.
Here are some pics.

I just found your story while surfing around on Samba. Awesome video. I did the Mojave Trail back in 85 in a 4 wheeler but would love to take my thing out, on the trail. Hope your ride is getting put together and ready to drive soon. I am in So Cal so any time you go on a run down I would like to come along. Looks like a lot of fun.
