Just curious what others have experienced ? I've owned three early ( 1980 to 1991 NA ) VW diesels now but never went over 200,000 miles on any of them and never had any pump or injector problems .
Also owned 3 old Mercedes diesels with lots ( about 300K ) of miles but never any pump problems , not even sure how I would tell if pump was going bad ? _________________ Currently own : 1969 Beetle w/ 1600cc, Single Port, Solex 30 PICT 2, Dist. 113 905 205 T, stock exhaust.

Usually you will have rough running at idle when the pump is really worn and should be replaced. _________________ I will never lie, but sometimes the truth changes.

My 85 Jetta had 470,000 kms on the motor when I replaced it due to low compression and the injection pump was still working fine. _________________ 1985 Diesel Jetta Coupe (temporarily retired at

Does Canada have the ultra low sulfur diesel or the high sulfur for Highway use , what we call off road only diesel ( farm use ) and how often do you change your filters . Thanks . _________________ Currently own : 1969 Beetle w/ 1600cc, Single Port, Solex 30 PICT 2, Dist. 113 905 205 T, stock exhaust.

We didn't have ULSD when the original motor was still in it. As far as filter changes, I don't know how often the previous owner changed them (I bought the car with 360,000 kms on it) but I don't believe I changed it at all in the 110,000kms I ran it.
Unfortunately, I've read that the ULSD does reduce the life of the seals in the older pumps. _________________ 1985 Diesel Jetta Coupe (temporarily retired at

Typical failure on old pumps is they start leaking in the shaft groove (easy fix) and seals, but overall very reliable |
