Can you guys still pop your top or do you just remove the rear roof rack bar when you are camping? I have a tandem sit on top kayak and I strapped it on top last weekend and it felt too janky to get on the highway, so I took it off and I'm looking to get that setup.

I have to remove the rear rack... but I only would do that if I'm camping for a few days so it's not a big deal. The white kayak on bottom is an Ocean Kayak Malibu II, fits fine. Those are Thule racks, I think they were called Super Tall Feet or something to that effect... they were the only ones that were tall enough.

I have to remove the front one, but yeah.
They sell the kind that you attach directly, but I couldn't bring myself to drill holes in the top.
That's basically your choice though - drill holes or remove the rack every time.

FYI - I had a hard time finding tall enough feet for a westy top.

I had everything cleaned that morning and took this shortly after hitting the dirt road. It didn't stay clean for long. Smile

Since canoes are allowed as well, here is a few photos from our trip last summer to June and Mammoth lakes with our Old Town canoe and 1970 Westy. The canoe is mounted to a Thule Super High Gutter Foot Pack 953.

Not really the time of year to be posting these, but I stumbled across the thread and thought I would post some of my history of boats on Buses…

My first Westy, and the first boat(kayak) I built. It was a 19 foot Pygmy boat kit from Port Townsend, WA . Wayyyyy back in 1989.

I got a 68 Double Cab when I was going to boat school a few years later. I built a skin on frame boat from scratch in 1994. I miss my dog more than anything in this picture.

Most recently we were doing a move and I had to move our skin canoe and a very heavy plank of yellow cedar(2 inches thick) for my tug restoration project. Thank heavens for a sturdy Machine-O-Matic rack.

Last weekend (100 mile round trip) I simply ratchet strapped the kayak down to the luggage rack ties and the rear bumper. Not ideal, but with no rack and a short jolt down to Hot Springs, I was pleased. No marking or anything on the top, but this as a continuous technique, wouldn’t be the best idea, I don’t think.

Need to get some 68" or 72" Crossbars. But these 58" work fine for now. Got the whole rack setup for $125 on CL. Yakima 1A Towers, 58" Crossbars (plan to eventually get 68"), Yakima Landshark Cradles, mounted on Artificial Gutters. I like hauling my 14' kayaks flat in cradles instead of J style on the sides. A Bus is a windy ride to begin with so keep the kayaks low IMO.
