Too much trouble to swap sides with the battery. Just fix it. I can't weld so once I bought a replacement tray for the right side and cut and fit it to lay over the top. Then I used a marine sealant to basically glue it in place. Sounds like a hack but actually it came out ok since I was painting the whole compartment. |
Ok I was more so just curious. Thanks! Cool Idea. _________________ 72' Sunroof Bus - Kansas Beige

I'm so glad you posted this. I'm waiting for the guy who's going to swap my engine to let know me when to bring him the '73 but I wanted to replace the battery tray beforehand. Now I won't have to hire a mobile welder.
After seeing all these nice engine bays I'm going to clean mine up this weekend. Anything that shouldn't get wet? BTW there's no engine but still wires and cables. _________________ 1973 Wild Westerner "Mr. Peabody"

Don't get anything but the body wet.
As soon as you spray in there be prepared to replace your ceiling. Don't get any electronics wet!! Don't power wa your wires or the fuel tank. If its metal your good.
I usually clean all my wiring by hand then use a protectant on the plastic sheath then I cover it up. Then me and a hot bucket of water and purple power attack. _________________ Special Thanks to:

Thanks Curtis!
I'm trying to make some room so I can squeeze by arse through the hatch.
Can I remove this canister and the fan that's hanging there, and will I still need those items if I'm swapping in a 2.0 with carbs?
(sorry I don't have my manuals so I don't know what they are for). I see a lot of engine pics without them.
My ceiling is in good shape so I'm going to remove that before I clean.

They are part of your emissions system to keep the fuel you paid for in the tank, instead of floating off in a fog when it gets hot out.
For the full meal deal, read this post from 5 years ago that I wrote for the Beetle. It is equally applicable (more so if you intend to sleep in the bus) for any model, and doesn't matter if you are fuel injected or carbureted.

Thank you Webwalker for the link. That looks like something even I can do.
The guy that's doing the engine swap from my '79 to my '73 told me to make a list of stuff I want to strip off the '79
and I'm learning that I should strip every little knob and part no matter how rusty it looks. Don't throw anything out. _________________ 1973 Wild Westerner "Mr. Peabody"

Ah- I'm planning on a similar Aerosol Overhaul when I get my engine build finished.
Unrelated- does your car stumble or bog off the line on the first drive of the day? I'm looking for preheated air OR heat risers and see neither. I needed it in Phoenix AZ, so I'm curious. _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

Keen eye... No the preheat tubes were completely eaten through and weren't able to be saved, so they were trimmed. This was a temporary solution for now to get it operational. Don't have the air preheat hooked up either, and no stumbles so far. That said, I'm in south Texas and it was 101 today. My experiences might change with cooler weather down the road.
Longer term plans are to drop in a 2176 stroker that I have complete in parts, along with dual throttle bodies and Megasquirt EFI.
I picked this westy up about 2 months ago, so for now it was clean up and refresh the existing (and apparently healthy) stocker engine. Focusing on getting it road worthy for now before I start with the upgrades. _________________ Fightin' Texas Aggie Class of 2006

Good job but sometime you should ditch that exhaust and get a bus exhaust. That one will cause headaches. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

Thanks! That exhaust is on "the list" of things to be attended to.
This engine overall is just temporary, and I'm just focusing right now on getting it road worthy for the time being. This bus had been off the road for the past 7 years when I got it. The remaining upgrades will follow. _________________ Fightin' Texas Aggie Class of 2006

As far as a good detergent for decades the old powdered Tide laundry soap is about the best when used in a thick solution |
I noticed in another thread that you recommended Tide.. I thought what the heck my engine tin is dirty, I'll soak everything in a big tub of hot water and Tide.
My fan shroud is now at the powdercoat shop.. The Tide made the OG paint bubble up inside and out and the paint completely failed!
It didn't hurt anything else, just the fan shroud. Y'all gotta be careful not to leave your stuff soaking in it too long _________________ Robert in Memphis
