I'd like to put the radio and speaker back into the bus, and here is a pic of the original speaker. Is there anything that I can do with the inner workings of the speaker? I don't know if it works or not, and the black part of the speaker is like paper. Rob gave the original radio to his friend years ago to fix, but his friend lost it (I think in the early 70's). But a buddy of mine hooked me up with a guy who had a radio just like it. Anything I can do with the speaker?

There are a few places that you can send that speaker to to re-cone it. I don't have a link handy but if you search the internet or this site, you'll come across some names.

Thanks for the replies. I have sent an email out to a local business that does re-coning, so I can take care of that locally. I have another question re: the install of the radio. As you can see, it fits very well into the dash, but I don't have the pieces that screw on to the volume/tuning pegs to secure the radio to the dash itself. Are these merely thin bolts that screw on to secure the radio to the dash before the knobs are put on? Is there an internal bracket that I may be missing?

Those radios did not always have a bracket on the back, they were often just fastened to the dash by the nuts alone.

I purchased the nuts from Wagen-Werks and they arrived yesterday. Thanks, Everett. You were right- these were very difficult to find. I also removed the broken antenna -

and replaced it with one purchased from Wolfsberg West -

I saved the original mechanism for the antenna.

However, I now have another question. The pictures below show the wiring for the replacement radio, as well as the wiring that I'm assuming was for the original radio before it was lost. The radio I have is a Sapphire I. I'm at a loss as to where on the fusebox to plug it in. I have looked for posts for this wiring, but I haven't found anything. I also looked in my Bentley manual, but the wiring diagrams do not have anything indicating where the radio wiring should go. I had the wiring fixed a few weeks ago, so everything works the way that it should, so I'm not about to unplug something and find it doesn't work again. I'm perfectly content with having a radio in the bus for looks only, but it would kind of be nice to have a working radio (if only for the 'ultra-cool' AM radio stations Very Happy ) Any suggestions?

I could be wrong- others will chime in I'm sure. Should have 5 wires- Power, ground, light, and 2 speakers wires. I'd wire it to the fuse box to a key on hot, or an accessory spot if there is one. I'd think red is positive- the rest should be self explanatory.

Om the '63 wiring diagram
the radio connects to the right-most fuse box position, where the large red wires are connected.
It is on the unfused side as the power wire to the radio has its own fuse.
It is hooked to live power all the time so you can use the radio when the Bus is off.
Usually you do not want it hooked to keyed power as leaving the key on can burn up the distributor points.

Use alligator jumpers and touch an AA battery momentarily off and on and see if it clicks and moves a tad. If so you can use Elmer's Wilhold Glue to lay down beads over all the gaps and cracks. The holes actually don't matter it will still work. It will last like that for years unless the perimeter paper is just dust.

Yeah, that's just it. The perimeter paper is so delicate that merely touching it rips it. I took the speaker in to a vintage speaker repair shop today and he's going to re-cone it. I put the radio in with the knobs and it looks pretty good.

When I get the speaker back from the shop, I'll see about hooking it up and testing it out.


Okay, you still need to get the chrome "rings or whatever you call them" that go beneath your ivory knobs that are used for both decoration (cover up those thin shaft nuts) and on most early radios are used to adjust the tone, and sometimes the fader between two speakers on certain model radios. See the photo of my Sapphire II AM/FM monaural radio below.

Those chrome rings should be easy enough to locate used in the classifieds or at a swap meet. Nice to finish off the look of your vintage audio rig!

Oh yeah! If you REALLY want to finish off the look of your audio rig, get some speaker grill cloth or thick mosquito screen (the "can't-see-thru" type) in black or charcoal and cut and installed it as seen in my photo above...

I have a broken latch with one ok knob, it has some tiny cracks starting at the base.
I'll send it to you if you send me your address.
They do unscrew but not easily, you might break it trying to get it off.

I agree that it might be better just to buy a whole other latch, there are lots in the classifieds.

I've looked at the classified ads on The Samba, and I found a pair of used, and pretty worn chrome dial rings, and I might purchase that pair, but I'd really like to purchase some that look a bit better. I've searched on Wolfberg West, and other VW sites, but they don't seem to stock these anymore. On another note, I have the original speaker screen that was stock to the bus, so when I get the speaker back from the speaker repair shop (should be any day now), I'll put that in place so that it will look like she did when she came out of storage.

Well, my interest got the best of me and I took apart my broken latch.

I don't think what I have will work for you.

One side appears to be a stud and one side is a knob that unscrews.

On my broken latch, the side that unscrews is cracked and missing a big chunk. The "good" side is the side with the stud, which is the same side you already have.

It is possible that the other side unscrews too? It seems VERY solid and I wonder if it would break the knob if I tried to unscrew it from the stud.

The side that is cracked there was pretty hard to unscrew but I wasn't worried about it since it was already cracked in 1/2.

I don't know if the other side unscrews from the knob, and I'd be a bit nervous to give it a try considering how hard it was for you to unscrew the one that you have. I'll probably talk to Jonny about getting the whole mechanism and replacing it, and I suppose in a pinch, just to keep the piece from coming out for some reason, I could just put a little bolt on the end to keep it in place.
