This is not mine. A grind is building it and when it's done hoping to get more than 36hp out of it. He is casting his own parts and designing it from scratch.

Here's a couple of pics..

Looks good. Is it. A stock engine?
Turbo looks small gt12? I would use a gt1544.
And maybe a Second injector for the wet manifold

Stockish.. 77mm ww pistons.
Heads have had work, valve job, bigger springs for the pressure, pushrods are been modified, case has been tapped and worked for better oil flow,
Its a IHI RHB31 turbo used on jap cars.

This is all info from him, he's the wizard. I'm the frog in his pocket.

Where does one get a throttle body for a 36HP ? Must also be home made ? That is awesome build.

i got to see some speedo footage of a 0-60mph run by this motor in carbed form. by my rough timing it's doing 0-60 in about 11 seconds.

I'd be very happy if mine could do that.

G'day everyone!!

My name is Isaac. I haven't posted here before but have long time browsed the pages of the vintage speed and 36hp challenge threads.

The turbo 36er has been a project of mine over the last 12months. I originally built it with a microtech fuel injection setup but with some minor issues I decided to build a blow through carb setup. I also upgraded to a bigger turbo and better manifold design.

I modified an early 36hp fuel pump for boost referenced fueling and a 31pict 4 carby.

Here is a video of it running with the carby setup. It's very reliable and strong at 8psi of boost.

Hi Isaac, Nice work. Hope you don't mind a couple of questions. Are you still using the charge cooler? With a heat exchanger under the car? How are you handling the turbo oil drain? What turbo did you end up with. What is that plate fixture on the fuel pump? Thanks, Jerry Avis

Hi Jerry,

Congratulations on your result at bonneville this year.

The brass plate fixture is a jig to pretension the pump spring. The black nylon disc you can see is something I machined up so the boost pressure wouldn't bypass the diaphram and bleed into the crankcase. I also installed an O ring on the pump pushrod.

The pump works well but I have discovered its limitation. 4th gear on boost around 80-85mph I have a surge as the float bowl runs out of fuel.

I will return to a fuel injection setup in the new year.

The turbo is a Garrett T15. Here is a picture compared to the rhb31 I started with.

My intercooler is an air to air only but I'm planning on a system similar to yours next as I'm only dropping around 20-25deg due to the poor location.

The oil return travels down hill to the Berg sump. I prefer to drain above the oil level but having said that I'm having no issues with oil breaching the turbo seals. Feed line is a -3an, pressure stays stable at 30psi, then 50 under higher engine speed.

thanks. Nice mods to the pump. You might try a larger fuel inlet valve in the carb. I used a 2.0mm from a Kadron 40 carb. I'm looking forward to details on how your FI system works out.

I did try the bigger inlet valve which helped a little. I redrilled one that could be disassembled. It's now 2.2mm. I think I may have hit the limit of the small carb or the pump.

On previous blow through engines I've built I've started with a 34pict or twin 32pdsit's.

I never had this issue on those setups running 12-14psi with mechanical pumps also.

Good to know that drainage system works. I like the packaging options it creates. Nice turbo. From the map it looks like lots of potential for a 36. I really like boost once it gets past about 12psi Very Happy

Jerry, would you be able to post some footage of your turbo 36 ?

I'd love to see it as a base of comparison. Smile

I'm afraid I was tech impaired at Bonneville, and didn't get any video. All I have is one 105 mph run at the Alvord Desert in 2013 when the World of Speed was rained out. It's a crappy video, but if you look closely you can read the speed on the GPS, and the boost guage is low center under the dash. Boost topped out at 15 psi, and I didn't try for higher because we only had 100 octane UNL gas. We had red cones at the one-mile mark. The cam timing was advanced back then, and boost came in early, but I think it quit pulling early as well. I retarded the cam timing after this, and picked up a few hundred rpm top end. You can't hear the engine very well because the ice water pump is so noisey. The exhaust note changes drastically between 15 psi and 20. Laughing
