Recently a customer asked if we could build them a fully forged 17" version of the familiar "Cosmic" wheel. This may become a production wheel so I thought I would share the build process with you all.

Standard widths will be 7,8 and 10" and just like my other wheels they will be available in custom offsets, customers will order what offsets they need.

I think of a forging as a piece of metal that's heated and mashed in a press to make the shape, at least the general shape and then the details can be cut in a milling operation.

looks to me like this whole thing is machined from a solid billet.

not criticizing, the piece looks great, just trying to clarify what's happening here.

have you given any thoughts to making centers that will work with OZ or BBS lips and barrels ?

Thank you for the kind words. To clarify these are not from a solid chunk of billet or "plate" material. Take notice a few pictures back there is a blank "forging" which has been heated and mashed into that shape. The rim or barrels these are going into is also from a forged material, they are not OZ or BBS barrels. The planning that went into this wheel was tremendous and there were several months of R&D to get to this point, much like my current 17 and 18" wheels. This "one off" set was made for a customer and may never become a production wheel. I just thought I would share the process with anyone interested.

I see...
I remember seeing a series of images showing the stages of a Fuchs wheel being forged., including how the barrel and lip were made from the same billet via pressure and not cutting with a mill.

anyway...I have seen on other boards like Stanceworks, people taking 1 piece wheels and cutting the lip and barrel off leaving a flange on the perimeter of the center section to bolt on modular wheel barrels and lips.

the idea of having old school aftermarket VW wheels that you can change the lip and barrel appeals to me. I can't say it appeals to me enough that I'm a possible customer. maybe, maybe not. I'm already pushing my limit o wheel storage now.

either way, I always enjoy seeing your work. very nice !

I had a set of Cosmics on my 67 Mini, I always loved them. As is such, I love these 17 inch versions for the Bug. What type of cost would you be looking at for a custom set like this? I have NO idea but am just curious.
