Was it the Pertronix coil or the other one that was acting the fool?

Pertronix, for better or worse. Certainly has shaken my confidence in them.

You may have swayed me to the side of the Bosch Blue. Wink

I can honestly we've never had a bad Bosch Blue Coil out of the box and have never had a return on one after 20 years of doing this. Everyone has an opinion of what coil is best and I have no interest in getting into that fray, but the Bosch Blue Coils are all we run in our VWs and we're happy which is why it's all we carry.

I'd go with the Carb float. If set too low the carb will run out of fuel at high RPM, full throttle.

Anyway, hope it's gone! Smile

I am following this thread. I have a similar problem with my 74 Super convertible. I removed the tank. There was no screw on filter like on my older cars. There was just a nipple for the fuel hose. I gently used my air worm to blow through. Seemed clear. Next some welding wire through the front to back metal tube. Sprayed a bunch of brake cleaner from both ends. Next the air worm. Seemed clear. I cleaned up the tank vent connections. It had seemed to drain well prior to my fixes. I put my filter (metal) up front, clamps, new hoses etc.

I had previously raised the float, changed fuel pumps, coil, reset points, timing, checked manifold connections.

Just returned from a test drive of about 2 miles. It runs great.

This form has been a great help.

Thank you for the update! Sounds like I have quite a bit more work to do! Very Happy

Right now I am waiting on testing the new ignition/ coil to see if that has fixed the problem. I am sort of burnt out on trying to fix the problem, but might take another swing this weekend.

Thanks for the info!

Interesting development. Turns out I had a bad chassis ground this whole time. I don't know if that will fix this problem, but it certainly wasn't helping!

Still haven't gotten up the courage to check...

Well I put on my big boy pants and took the Buggy for a jaunt on the motorway today. And... *drum roll*

The chassis ground *appears* to have been the problem.

I had a good headwind that kept me nice and bogged down and had no problems. Not 100%, but I am tentatively calling this one done.

Now to but 1000ft of green #10 and make the buggy look like a mad spagetti monster. (Not really... conductive grease, some more polish on the metal, and maybe a battery-to-engine dedicated ground...)

That's fantastic! Thanks for the update. Electrical issues can be a real pain to diagnose. It sounds like you gave your fix a very good test run. Fingers are crossed that it stays fixed. There's nothing like re-gaining confidence in your ride.
