Those little computer cooling fans are often 12v. You could put a bank of them under the dash and they might be low profile. |
This is very true, I sail and they are often used on sailboats sailing a long distance, because they use very little battery power. |

Has anyone tried an modifying an ice chest with a 12v fan and hose duct to make a cooler? I have access to free ice at work and wondering if it would last the 45 minute trip home in the afternoon?

Ha ha...so funny you ask. I did this earlier this summer from an old 48 quart cooler I had for fishing...and indeed it works (But not nearly as good as an A/C unit of course). The trick is to make sure that the cooler is completely full of ice (Which is pretty heavy when full), after about an hour, it doesn't seem to be as cold as when it is at first so changing out ice is needed...which is a pain. It does get my bedroom (10x12) colder (doors closed, etc) for a bit...just enough to take the edge off...but it won't make the room frigid by any means. It was a $18 experiment that I would say was a success...but not a perfect solution.
I had thought about making a smaller/12v. version for the ghia...I have a lunch-box sized cooler that I was debating on using and getting one of those computer fans for it...but I don't think the ice-capacity and air flow from that fan would be enough to make a difference in the car. It's cheap enough to try, that's for sure...but my hunch is that it won't be all that noticeable. Maybe if it's just below my legs as I drive, it could help a bit? |

Race car drivers use exactly this sort of thing for their "cool suit" or "cool helmet" systems.
Sounds really fiddly to me, though. A real bother.
A while back, either a Karmann Ghia or a Type 2 of some sort was my everyday daily transportation, in a part of California where the summer temperature reaches 104 degrees F (40 deg C) or hotter. Rolling down the windows and keeping moving wasn't too awful bad - only the effects of the vinyl upholstery on one's back and bottom were unpleasant aspects. Perhaps I'm of a stronger or more stoic disposition than others, but opening the windows was my solution.
However, I now drive a BMW with really nice air con everyday (100 miles plus). Maybe I'm getting soft! _________________ David Ruby

We used one of these SCCA racing. Worked well for short runs.

I have about 20 fans from computers and network switches, and the problem with using the standard fan is that the airflow gets spread out over a large area, and the mounting position takes up a lot of vertical space. A design that would work better under the dash is the small flat centrifugal fan. The air flow is more directional, it does not hang down like regular fans, and a creative person could even make an adjustable vent for them. I plan on experimenting with a couple this next week...

I also have zero air flow. It feels like I'm in a pool of hot water from the chest down even with the pop outs open and the windows down. Hardly any air coming into the front of the car. It's even worse now that I have a Subaru conversion and some of the hot air from the radiator finds its way into the cabin. I have an AC set up that needs modified to fit but for now I'm working on a way to get some more air circulating. _________________ 73 Thing

I agree with the other people that have said the nostril vents don't provide any measurable airflow to your face. The open windows don't help that much either. I have a convertible and I also wish it had vent windows like other VWs.
Putting the top down here in Las Vegas during the daytime gives you good ariflow, but you also just bake in the sun.
I bought a set of the wind deflectors from John Copello and they work pretty well. If you angle them in toward the interior, they function much like a regular vent window turned around to catch the air. The only drawback is that they have to be angled away to close the window. No big deal.
John's vent deflector.
Angled in to catch air and direct it inside.
View from inside. |

I came up with a fairly economical way to stay somewhat cool in our Ghia. The addition of the wind deflectors helped when we are at speed, but they don't help at all when you are stopped.
I have been looking for an underdash A/C unit that fits the Ghia for a while. I would prefer the old vintage type that sat right in the middle of the dash, but they seem to be really hard to find and a big hole has to be cut into the floor of the trunk to accommodate the blower motor.
I found a unit on eBay, it is an old one made by Clardy(?). I have never seen one like it and it was cheap so I bought it. I cleaned it up and lubed the motor and fixed the fan switch. I planned on using it just for the fan, and NOT hook up the A/C portion. The fan blows hard and it helps a lot when you're stopped in traffic.
I actually came with vent channels that extend from both sides and they each have a register to blow air from the edges of the dash. I chose not to use them because the driver's side would not fit because of the steering column. The passenger side would fit perfectly, though. I just plugged the holes so all the air comes out of the two center registers.

Has anyone somehow put a swamp cooler on their car? Also to where the door is usable and it is not mounted on the window? It would be a bit interesting climbing across the car to be a passenger... _________________ 1971 Karmann Ghia

Anyone know here to find these? you can see at 1:17 that one is on the window. I dont think 356s came with vent windows. I would like to do the mod in the video.

Cool idea, but I think the problem for a Ghia would be that there's no window trim to mount the top end of it to. |

It took a very long time (for some reason ) but here it is! It is just a stupid fan from walmart with a 12v cig lighter in the dash (aftermarket). I got it for 12 bucks. Here are some pics. It is just clipped on my open glove box. It is so good that I can sit in the open sun on a 100*F day with the windows up
