I see this car did change hands, and the new owner is an excellent caretaker for it. He has a background as an aircraft conservator.

Wow, I was thinking that this was going to be a keeper for the Po.
Im glad to hear it will continue to be well cared for though.

I'm confused. Did it go overseas or does disneyherbie own it now?

That was an ideal flip- smooth, without the bitter aftertaste.

No idea why a previous poster thought it was going overseas. Rest assured it's still in the USofA. I think the original poster on this thread realized it wasn't a car to just hop in and drive to car shows with the wife and kids. It's a pretty special car that requires some detailing and is most deserving of NOS parts for what little it does need. I had a very nice ragtop that better suits his needs, and with any luck now this one will never see more than 20k original miles. I'll keep posting updates on the car here for those that are interested or need reference to a completely unmolested L380 car...

Slowly but surely I'm sorting through things on this car. First order of business is refitting the original Garbe Lahmeyer vacuum advance distributor. Somewhere along the way it was replaced with a 009. So far I've been able to source original NOS VW parts for this swap...

That's fantastic news disneyherbie-
I'm the second owner of my '63 Turkis car and am riveted by this thread. I'm relieved to learn you know what you've got. Standing by for more progress/reference-grade updates! Bradford

Thanks man. I'm making progress on it. Replaced the rusty tailpipes with correct length German units. Currently waiting on a couple more NOS tuneup parts for the Garbe Lahmeyer ignition system. Should be running again by next week. In the meantime I've just been cleaning and polishing as much as I can...I'm loving the correct black outlined German hubcaps! Those coupled with the thin whitewalls really make the wheels stand out!

Well preserved car, and thrilled it has such a sympathetic conservatoire!!!

The wheels look awesome! It's very hard to match the factory for their clean and crisp two-tone finish, and no questions about them being the proper shades either Wink

You are super lucky to be able to putt around in this beautiful survivor, thanks for letting us enjoy it as well Very Happy

Thanks gang. Really appreciate it. Funny how as you get older you just long for a nice original car to tinker with. I cringe when I think about things I did to vws back in my teens. Hopefully this will help make up for some of that. 😉

I had a friend over to see the car in person yesterday and we both just walked around the car smiling. It's hard to describe just how original and untouched this car is. Little details like the plastic cap for the lubrication hole under the door latch, threaded plastic plugs for the seatbelt anchors (never had them installed)-it's just an absolute time capsule. I'm excited to keep sharing progress on it, as well as use it as a reference to help others with restorations...

Today was a good day. Managed to ditch the 009 in favor of the original Garbe Lahmeyer vacuum advance distributor. Thanks to some great samba folks I was able to source all NOS German parts for the tuneup! She's purring now...

I spent some time with DisneyHerbie and the car last week. I purposely didn't take any photos until he's done doing everything he needs to. But I will say that this car has blown my mind. I've had a lot of post 68 beetles, and the only car I can put on the same cool factor to this one was my 151 mile 77 sedan. This car is that nice. It's not perfect, but it's got just enough patina to it that shows its originality and that it was loved.

Tory told me a great story about how the original owner would wash the car that I'll let him tell if he wants. I hope to one day have an original car that's THIS nice.

Managed to take some pictures of the car outside the garage for once! I put a few (literally) miles on the car and what an experience to drive such a "tight" like new VW!

Aside from the NOS mudflaps I plan on keeping the accessories to a minimum. I did add the "You have been Volkswagened" plaque despit my car having 4 more hp. I've always loved the nostalgic vibe of them and was lucky enough to acquire one recently. Aside from a little more detailing that needs to be done, the car is essentially finished. I think the German outlined hubcaps add a nice correct touch too...

I bet it rides sweet, for sure. It's a shame more people don't get an opportunity to drive an original, 100% mechanical condition bug vs. the worn out, needs most everything replaced VW's out there today.

I've gone thru my original, bone stock 67 bug mechanically. People who drive it are blown away how well it drives, stops and how solid it is. I've had many VW's over the years. Most were worn out. What a difference between the two.

I've been riveted to this thread from page 1 and could only dream of such a find. FWIW, the NOS mudflaps do not fit the patina of the car and the plate is kinda tacky too.
