Hi all, after years of being on the aircooled VW scene (type 2, type 1 and recently type 3) I have just bought a 356A while I am living in the US.

I have always loved speedmaster wheels and wondered if anyone has ever fitted them to a 356? Any pictures?

Also, I am ultimately going to turn this into an outlaw and wondered if anyone had done air ride, late Porsche brakes or type 1 engine swaps?

here is the car I just purchased:

Not sure what speedmaster wheels are. Your A is a B. You can install C brakes but they're heavier that drums and won't stop any better unless your road racing. That also changes the lug bolt pattern so the speed master wheels might not fit. Type 1 engines go right in with little effort, sheet metal and swapping a few cables but the value of the car goes way down.

My typo was in my first posting, I know its a 356B, apologies.

This isn't going to be an extreme outlaw, all of the changes I will make will be reversible and it already ahs a 356C engine so not matching numbers. The plan was to out a large Type 1 engine in and do some classic racing with uprated brakes.

Thanks for all the advice.

Dr. Scope -- I don't get your comment? Are you talking about anyone who modifies a 356?

Here is a link to a pre A with a big type 1 engine in it. http://forum.porsche356registry.org/viewtopic.php?...658963c3e7

Yes Porsche discs can be fitted. Pretty much a bolt in but the lug pattern changes from a wide 5 to a small 5. Properly set up drums will work acceptable but not quite as good as discs. Here is 12 page discussion on 356 disc brake conversions.
http://www.abcgt.com/forum/6-Hot-Rod--Modified-356/9578-Disc-Brake-conversion-kits-for-356.html

Air ride has been done on a 356 but always involves cutting up the suspension/body so as not to be reversible so it is rare. Also most 356s are still 6 volt so a compressor is more work to hook up. Mainly just lowered with the factory adjuster in the front or drop spindles. The rear is done with indexing the torsion bars. You can static drop it easily to the point it becomes not very drivable. I have 2.75" of clearance from the front tow hook to ground.

i'm open minded and have respect for restorers and hot roders or out laws but there is a saying. ANYONE CAN RESTORE A CAR, BUT IT TAKES A REAL MAN TO CUT ONE UP.
