Good choice with the 4.12 rear axle and the bigger engine- makes for easy highway cruising as well as hill driving.

Will you need alot of work to patch up the headlight buckets and fit some headlights so you can pass inspection?

Does your rollbar extend down to the chassis, or is it just welded to the top of the body edge?

You could consider relocating that Optima battery to under the rear seat on the right side (like where it's in a Beetle) to make room in the engine compartment. Helps alot with dual carbs.

Headlights will fit if the tabs are repaired and we don't have inspection here on vehicles built before 1975. The roll bar is attached to the floor, and to the rear tire wells.

got rid of the tail pipes, cleaned up the engine harness, and added a proper coil. Tuned, and almost ready to roll. Ignition switch has a short, and we need tires and seats.

Darrel, since ghia's have vented decklids, this motor actually runs very cool even without the tins but we are searching for the right tins to modify for use with this setup.

We had the engine and trans back out today to address a slight shifting issue with the new nose cone. All went back in and took it for a cruise, super fun to drive! No complaints at all Very Happy

It's funny how the majority of people I talk to about this car say something like "too bad someone let it sit out in the weather for so long" Laughing and then they go on to describe there own experience restoring a ghia, the cost of rust repair and bodywork it took them to "put it back on the road" Then I'll show them the floor and rockers and watch there facial expression change from a smirk to utter confusion as they look for the non extistent rust holes. Very Happy

made to one show, then got a fluttery misfire. Probably ignition, compression tested 140 on all 4. Will get back to it later. Contemplating suspension/tires.

A bottle opener mounted on the bumper is a great idea. Smile

I'm thinking that you shouldn't just settle for one of those simple brackets that you hook a bottle cap into and twist the bottle down, though.

Go full out and get one of those wine bottle corkscrews that are made to mount to a counter top - something like this:

... or better yet, why not one of each type?
It would help sell the backstory that the Ghia was found in a barn in Sanoma county, where it had been used for decades as a sort of "utility cart" to run around the vinyards of a winery.

A story like that, if believed, could easily add an additional 25% or more to the car's resale value. Wink

So don't buy any of this CHINA EMPI JUNK. It's not worth it. I tried to give these parts a chance with an open mind, since I had recently tested the AA piston sets and found they did work. The EMPI HPMX carbs are no good. Also the EMPI vacuum advance distributor is no good. Had to throw away the brand new dizzy, since it suddenly caused a misfire after a couple "load tests" We tossed a tried and true 009 on it, and it now it runs like a swiss watch AND needs less jetting than we had initially concluded with the vacuum distributor when it was working. Bullshit!

Aside from the couple hiccups this car is a blast. Cruises great, tons of power.

Here's on the way back from the VW invasion show, we had the fuzz tail us about 1/4 of the way, when he turned off, we opened them up and you can see, I had a hard time keeping up. Both cars have nearly identical AS21 motors, and the same gear ratios. Ghia's using AA's, Bug's using mahles, compression's a bit higher in the ghia and it's got the 44 HPMXs. Bug has a single zenith. Don't know how the weight compares, since the bug is loaded, and the ghia's missing a roof? Maybe close in weight too.

You did. Problem is thats a unique cap, stock for that dizzy. We couldnt even get a decent cap and rotor for it. Thats why its landed in the trash.
