|
I found another 73 Thing for sale locally that I convinced my wife to let me get. The PO bought it and was hit on the driver fender and never got around to fixing it. He bought all the sheet metal (new) to replace any damaged areas as well as the rust on the rocker panels. Also came with 2 sets of curtains, bottom windshield metal, original engine (in addition to whats in the car-not running)... My other (74) Thing is going to be a bigger project than I intended so I am hoping to get this one up and running fairly fast and have time to drive around this summer. Let me know your thoughts on it.

By the looks of that 3rd and 4th picture, it doesn't look like there was very much "convincing" required. _________________ Supposed to be 77käfer, but there are no umlauts on an american keyboard

I'd have to agree.
That Thing looks to be in excellent "barn find" condition! |

It looks like you scored! Any trouble opening or closing the driver's side doors? Another area to check is the front of the pan and the beam. Sometimes with a front impact, they will bend. An easy way to check is to measure the wheelbase on both sides. |

On the EGr setup I have a green hose coming off of it that is just sitting in the engine bay. Can you tell me where this connects to? If you look at my pics in the thread its the 5th one down and you can see the green hose coming out of the back. Thanks for your help. |

You are talking about the green hose in this picture? Near the crank pulley?
Maybe the Domeck Brothers' picture will help?

Green hose connects from the dist. to carb to make the dist advance. Should be a port on your carb and it looks like there is one with a cap. On my engine you will see were I am talking about |

I saw yours but mine has a plug in that port. Do I need to take the plug out? It looks like the PO just put in a metal plug. |

The green hose is for vacuum retard, when using the stock DVDA distributor. If you're using something else (or would rather run your DVDA as an SVDA), you'll want to plug the port on the carb. _________________ 1974 Thing -- under the knife

So I stopped by STLCAR's place last night and we got his Thing fired up! Well, poorly.. but it did run.
Plug wires were crossed up and timing WAY off.. I'm not familiar with how to set timing on the dual-vac dizzy so I just set it at TDC as a starting point to see if it would pop.
Couple of observations:
As noted, his current carb body does not have any Vac ports on the rear (rear is rear), just the one on the side where the Advance vac line is attached. Also, his carb as-is has essentially zero accelerator pump action.
He has another PICT-3 body with the proper ports. I advised taking the best of the 2 and making one that works with the 2nd body, making sure to have good accelerator pump action.
I was also unable to keep the engine running w/out some choke engaged. Open the choke fully: engine dies.
There's oil PUKING out of his breather port on the filler. I've never seen anything like it. But thinking back, I may have a hypothesis: Maybe there's no foil screen bit under the stand? There was also oil leaking around the base, so this could indicate a lack of both gaskets and the foil bit. eh?
He's got a busted exhaust stud on #2 creating a hellatious exhaust leak. My opinion is to pull the motor so that it can more easily be drilled out and re-studded.
I didn't notice if there were flaps / thermostat /etc (missing is very common in this part of the country) but pulling the motor would also allow easier replacement of the generator stand gaskets, allow for the stud repair, and allow for replacing any missing thermostat bits as well.
All the spark plug grommets that seal the tin were melted or missing.
He only had 3 new spark plugs which we gapped and installed. old ones were quite oil fouled. 4th was an old W8AC he had, which I cleaned up and stuck in temporarily.
In all not too bad for about an hour's worth of work. He's well on his way! _________________ Brian W

I swapped carbs and got the correct ports hooked up. Will be changing out the plug wires today. Take a look and let me know if you see anything out of place.

Got a new heat hose in just didn't take a picture with it in. On your oil bath it looks like you have 2 vac lines coming off, where does the gray line go. |
