Hello, I am installing a hotrodded 616/33-1 industrial engine into my 63 bug.
Does any of you 356 folks Know if the repro A type muffler flows as well as the later B or C type?
I was hoping that I could fit an A muffler as the outlets seems to match the beetle apron, but i it can't support around 100hp I'll have to modify a later style muffler.
If anybody has pics of a 356 to bug engine conversion please post.

Thanks Peter,Denmark

Hi Keith, I don't think I could bring myself to cut up an ABARTH muffler.

I doubt there is any difference. You could always buy a Bursh unit too.

No stock 356 muffler will fit in the exhaust area of a bug without significant modification. Probably the only thing that will even come close to being "bolt on" will be the most inexpensive aftermarket, non Bursch, header system that looks very similar to a common old school VW header. For the engine surround tin, use 912 side pieces trimmed down to fit, and VW 36hp breastplate over the exhaust, with only slight trimming, mostly around the dipstick area. 912 tin for the opening between the engine and trans. Trim radius to fit. Cool

I once had a '65 C motor in my (still have them both!) '56 bug. I bought (in the early '70's) an 'EMPI' exhaust which was built for just this purpose.

That VW went like a BOH, never new how fast it went, speedo only went to 80 mph. What mph you get at needle pegged?? haha! I have managed to control (pretty much) my crazyness in my old age. -corne-

I did the same thing in the 70's. 64 bug and 62 KG. Used the cheap extractor exhaust on both, and yes they did go like a BOH. I think it was the short VW gears.
I still see the cheap extractor's advertised new but don't remember where, check all the California warehouse sellers...

It's been a bit of time but this will work, and it's in your neighborhood.

This might work. Spendy though. The French, hey? I think I have a couple in the rafters.
