'72 engine lids' brow over license is narrower than full width of 73 up. See the 72 only thread. Looks like license plate recess is different shape on later years, too. |

Thank you, forgot about that. I cannot find production numbers. But there was a mid year change between the short brow and the long brow in 72.

Couple of questions.
I seem to remember the engine lid prop (spring) was moved to the left side at some point. If this did occur what year did it take place?
Thank You

I quess VW figured we weren't hitting are heads nearly enough on the engine cover. So they shortened it?

The engine lid is taller (heavier) on 68-71, the prop rod got shorter to equal the reduced fulcrum point and still clear the hatch when open is my theory. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Naw it was so they had less momentum when a gust of wind blew them down on your head.... I still am haunted by the echoes in my mind of my friend Scott laughing uncontrollably at just such a happening. Oh man, PTSD relapse on that one for me, not so much the wind, but every single asshole who's trying to make conversation says "can I look at the engine?" and then proceeds to open it themselves before I can intervene, followed by the immediate SLAM! when they hit the end of the prop rod and the finger pull slips out of thier hands, grrrrrrrr! _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

hi-I am restoring my 76 westy and bought a mint condition engine lid from a 77-79...so the hinges are different.
Is it possible or has anyone converted the engine lid hinge on a 72 to 76 body to the pin style on the 77-79?

more pix.... it seems that it makes the most sense to orient the "hook" of the engine lid prop towards the battery. The prop will operate with the hook pointing either way, but in order to reduce the injuries the smarter people that replied to my question turn theirs away from the opening....
Folks do it both ways, and the pictures prove it.

Orient it whatever way makes you happy, but VW thought it worked best facing the right (RH edge of middle pic below).

Why do some rear aprons have four mounting bolts at the back, and some have two?
I think my dented 71 apron has four, and I see some on classifieds that only have two. |

That's a splittie in the pic of the red bus above. But Bay aprons have 4 bolts until early 1971, then 2 were deleted leaving just the bumps where the holes go. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Hello, Don't buy one like the red bus...for a baywindow.
That rear apron on the red bus is customized(or for a split). On the early baywindows the mounting bolts for the apron is below the engine lid seal... Like on the yellowish bus shown.
And yes, 71 is the only year with only two bolt holes for mounting. |
