Judging by the empty firework containers on the rear of the car, I'm assuming something stupid happened here. |

Or at a minimum, something very very unfortunate.
You can be as cautious as you want on the 4th, and none of it matters if you have crazy neighbors.
It certainly looks fixable. But man, what a bummer. _________________ "The new Volkswagen 1303. We've made so many improvements, they're beginning to show." |

My vote is solidly for "stupid." At least they managed not to set the fuel system or engine case on fire. _________________ 1974 Thing -- under the knife

This makes me wonder if it started with a "hey yall watch this" kinda moment.
Usually when that gets stated somebody/somthing unplanned always happens.
Sure glad it didn't all go up in smoke.
Still a bummer tho.
Hope it gets fixed.

Clearly fireworks involved, decor on the car screams 4th of July weekend... Photos posted on the 6th July...
I brought this up out of curiosity, not to kick a guy while he's down.... |
Agreed.
No one knows if the car was torched, either, or had a fire due to a bad fuel line or the incorrect placement of a fuel filter.
In any event, if the owner of this Thing wants to contact me about selling it,
I am seriosly interested.
I was interested in one in Tennessee that needed a title, since I found out that only costs 12.00 to do, but he never got back to me, so I am broadening my search. _________________ L'audace! L'audace! Toujours l'audace! |

It's very clear that the fire wasn't in the engine compartment:
Did you miss the spent fireworks on top? My guess is that something failed to gain altitude, and exploded inside the car, lighting the interior. _________________ 1974 Thing -- under the knife

A low break on an aerial shell is always a bad thing. As a professional Pyro we mostly hate low breaks and always hate flower pots. _________________ I like to sit in my barn and play with my Thing!!!

Did you notice how none of the fireworks containers or patriotic decorations are singed, yet everything else is burned, including all materials from the seats?
Maybe these were placed inside the THing after the fire. _________________ L'audace! L'audace! Toujours l'audace! |

My guess would be that he had a stock of fireworks stashed under the seats and was setting off some kind of rockets that sent a shower of sparks back into the old bucket, which thereby ignited the stash under the seat. |

No roof on the car... or structure... and the side windows are on the ground, near the car... looking good.
Something fall inside of the car (that was without the roof at the time) and started burning on the seats? And they try to extinguish the fire with water... no foam from the fire men looks to be there... The flag looks intact of fire... and I bet the neigbor theory... because of the "police line"...
All assumptions... _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=538182 |

Any one ever tried burning the stock seat material before? It really looks like this fire took off and roared for a bit. I would not have thought the seat material by itself would burn that hot. |
