Jill and I rolled into our driveway at 8pm local time. It was an epic 4000+ mile adventure. Jill's Type 34 Ghia performed flawlessly and beat Sophy on mileage every tankful. Sophy made it with only a few minor issues.
Big shout out to Mike and the guys at Meineke Car Care Center in Troy, IL for getting Sophy's exhaust welded back on this morning. In and out in less than an hour and only charged me $20.
Lots more to post later....need to unpack, get the cars put away before the weather hits here, and unwind a little first.
Thank you to everyone that made this Invasion another huge success! The Type 3 family is AWESOME!!! |
A few times (or maybe it's the overlap between type3.org and here) you've said that the T34 Ghia outperformed "Sophy" for MPG throughout the trip but it's not clear what you're comparing as not all of us know what "Sophy" is. In other words, MPG-wise, are you comparing dual carbs to FI, a single carb to duals, or what? |

I can kind of answer that for John (someone will have to correct me though). Both cars are stock 1600's with dual Solex carbs. John's has a header, while I think Jill's car (the T-34) has the stock exhaust. I don't remember which distributor either engine is running, but I think the T-34 has an 009 in it. Otherwise, it's body shape (Sophy is a 66 Squareback). Now, the Square might be more loaded, which might becausing it to work a little harder, but both cars are being driven at about the same speed, and in theory weigh about the same , give or take. This means they both should be getting similar mileage.
But, when we went to the 2010 Invasion, we had 3 carbed cars (Notch, Fastback, and Squareback), and 1 FI car in our group. All of them were within 2 or 3 mpgs with each other, with Dave's 72 FI Square getting the worse (the rest of us were using "conservation of momentum theory" in practice) of the group. Even my Notch was getting similar numbers to Sophy.
I hope this helps. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Bob has it mostly right....
Jill's Type 34 Ghia is basically stock powertrain wise. 1967 Dual Solex Carbs, Stock Exhuast, Stock Cam, Stock Heads, Type 3 FI distributor,etc...
Sophy is my 1966 Squareback. Dual Solex Carbs, Stock Cam, Upgraded to Dual Part Heads with a fly cut to about 8.5 to 1 compression, j-tubes with a single QP muffler/exhaust, stock 66 Type 3 distributor.
Sophy was definitely loaded up with more stuff going out and coming back plus the Ghia has a bit less frontal area.
Sophy got 26.7 average mpg going out and 27.6 on the way back for a total average MPG for the trip of 27.1 mpg.
Jill's Ghia got 28.6 average mpg going out and 29.1 coming back for a total average MPG of 28.8 mpg.
Jim Adney posted that he average 26.3 mpg for the entire trip in his 1969 FI/Automatic Squareback.
We totaled 4051 miles in each car. Average fuel cost for the entire trip was $2.17/gal. Not bad. _________________ Later,

My 1962 T34 with stock 6V 1600cc motor & single Solex 32-PHN carb did 1100 miles over the weekend & got an average of 34 mpg. My 1968 T34 Automatic got far worse, maybe closer to 20 mpg. |

THANK YOU for the pics John. The shots from Grand Canyon were great, as were all the rest. The above shot is one of my favorites. It and the one above that Pedro likes (another 1 of my favorites) are "postcard" material. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Yes, Thank You to everyone posting pics and travel stories! Still hoping for a travel story to the Grand Canyon as I've never been there.
John, love your pics that included the flowers, clouds and animals. Glad I'm not the only one taking those kinds of pics. I was amazed at the variety of flowers and greenery. Did you go to both the Grand Canyon and Sedona on the same day?
Don!t know if I'd have survived the heat, but it looks like it was an Epic adventure!!!
P.S.
John,
Just "rewatched" all your photos as a slideshow. Totally Awesome!!!! Thank You so much for making them available for all to see! _________________ Sue

New York was the first state to require license plates, back in 1901. In those days, you had to make your own. Sears even sold Kits! Massachusetts was the first state to issue them in 1903.

The above picture, was a late night pinstripe demo for Lee and his garage. He has a sign post to point out VW places. Maybe he will chime in and post a picture. _________________ I think he meant "rare", as in "not well-done" |

Here's the signpost attached to my workshop. The round piece at the top will be the VW logo. Important places I've been will be added as time progresses. The T3 Invasion sign, hand-lettered by John in the dim midnight light at the Forest Villas on the last night of the Invasion is a prized keepsake.

The T34 Cabriolet just invites pretty girls (of all ages) to jump in and get their photos taken. I love the attention the car gets & I've never been one to turn a pretty girl down. Jason, remember those 60+ girls at the Cayucos T3 Rally? |
