Thanks for all the ideas and feedback. It is all appreciated.
I am pleased to announce that we have a local host in AZ for the 2016 Type 3 Invasion! Ken Rogers and his wife Sue have graciously volunteered to host the 2016 Invasion in the Flagstaff/Prescott, AZ area. Ken is a long time Type 3 enthusiast and all-around VW guy. Ken has a bunch of great ideas and possible sites to investigate. They are active in the VW scene in Northern AZ and will make great hosts. I met Ken many years ago when he still lived in Michigan and drove a really nice, bright green Type 3 truck conversion.
Exact location and dates for the Invasion are still to be worked out, but we are targeting the 3rd weekend in June 2016 as per usual. Stay tuned as we work through the details.
Over a year and half to save your pennies and make your plans.
I expect to see some of you SoCal folks in 2016.
Very excited! A huge thank you to Ken and Sue for stepping up. _________________ Later,

I am glad it's closer. But I believe I will have to rebuild my engine before undertaking that long a drive. But hey, it's two years away. Good chance I'll rebuild before then. |

Damn, another 2 way trip across Kansas? I hate driving across that state in the summer. It's almost as bad as driving across Oklahoma. Keep in mind Oklahoma has toll roads too. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Hey Bob, Gmaps has me running through Oklahoma not Kansas. 31 hrs from Toronto. Either way, looking forward to going home & working on my car, pulling out the wall map, getting ready (yeah I know almost 2 years out). Got lots to do. _________________ I think he meant "rare", as in "not well-done" |

It could be worse Bob, it could be a week in Kansas laying on a piece of cardboard in a hot parking lot surrounded by friendly hecklers... Oh wait. Never mind. _________________ 64 No'back Speedster "Pearl"

Just so you know, tolls from Missouri to OKC are 8 bucks (2 sections @4 each). Also, like Kansas, that time of year will see 100 degree + days.
I know, as I go that way to Texas (with the AC on) every now and then. Speed limit IS 75 though, which does help. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Hey we have a stretch of toll highway up here in Toronto, cost you that to get on & arm & leg to get off. $8.00 X2 not bad. On our way back from California (way back) it was 118 degrees. Nice dry heat. _________________ I think he meant "rare", as in "not well-done" |

That was western Missouri, not Kansas. Same result though.
I'm looking at taking the 65 Notch though, as that car likes road trips.
eyetzr, keep in mind that, gmaps doesn't allow for fuel stops, restroom breaks, traffic jams, lunch, dinner, or anything like that. From my house, I'm good to about Springfield, or Carthage MO on 1 day of driving (14 to 16.5 hours), after that I need some rest, then can hit it hard again. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

When we did California we went 10 hr days, trying to get most of the driving in by noon. I was not killing it either. This was a new engine, zero miles, fresh rebuilt car, zero miles, radio died the day we left. I want to do this all over again. 12 - 14.5 hrs is a long day, I would do one day like that no more, Need my naps & coffee breaks. _________________ I think he meant "rare", as in "not well-done" |

If he had said "The Vert," he'd have to make Damn sure he had devised a working top for it! Otherwise the two of us would arrive looking like Two Strips of Overly Done Bacon!
114 degrees (hot) in Kansas, even as a "dry heat" with the wind blowing (blast furnace), just about did me in... I know... "Wimpy, Wimpy, Wimpy" insert melted/ withered looking/ passed out type Smiley here.
Good thing seeing all of your smiling type 3 peeps' faces is worth the trip. _________________ Sue

New York was the first state to require license plates, back in 1901. In those days, you had to make your own. Sears even sold Kits! Massachusetts was the first state to issue them in 1903.

Kansas made eastern Colorado seem tolerable. Oppressive heat/humidity with the steering wheel canted to counter that incessant wind.
I was trying to by nice in the statement above. I won't share how I really feel... _________________ 64 No'back Speedster "Pearl"

I do understand. Life is just too short to drive through Kansas. I'm glad on on this side of that state. _________________ Wife says "You should spay and neuter your VW's so they quit reproducing"

If we end up in Flagstaff it will likely be much cooler than Kansas. Average highs in June are only in the upper 70s with average lows in the mid 40s. Prescott is only 5-7 degrees warmer on average.
I suspect getting there...Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, etc will be hotter.
