Talk of VW merging with Fiat, and since Fiat owns Chrysler, that would make one big happy family:
Quote: |
A German magazine is reporting that the families that control Fiat and Volkswagen have discussed the possibility of the German automaker taking over the Italian company.
Shares of Fiat jumped while Volkswagen shares dropped on European markets in response to the report.
Officials at Fiat and from Exor, the investment firm representing the family that controls Fiat, denied that talks have taken place.
“Fiat states that they have not held discussions with Volkswagen regarding a potential merger,” the Italian automaker said in a statement.
Exor owns 30% of Fiat.
Volkswagen officials have not commented.
Auburn Hills-based Chrysler, owned by Fiat, would be a key component of the takeover as Volkswagen seeks to extend its reach in the U.S.
German magazine Manager Magazin reported that VW chairman Ferdinand Piech, part of the family that controls the German automaker, has held talks with members of the Angelli family, which controls Fiat.

Why would VW want MBZ's sloppy seconds?
Besides, Chrysler still claims to have invented the minivan. With brain damage like that, what good can come of it?
And Fiat? I shudder. |

VW and Audi constantly rate near the bottom of quality control and consumer happiness. Anyone I know that has a VW made in the past 10 years think their VW is a POS. A guy I work with bought a brand new, $80k Audi. It was in the shop at the dealer more than his driveway. He got rid of it within a year. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Only issue with modern VWs is the freaking electrics.
Other than that no person I know seems to dislike them. |

"Modern"? They have had electrical gremlins since the '80s. Shame on Bosch, who is brilliant from an engineering perspective, but who has let quality slip steadily since the '70s. |

My 80s and early 90s GTIs and Jettas never has any electrical issues.
I have heard that a lot about modern VWs though. _________________ How to Post Photos

True. My wife's 97 Cabrio had zero problems in 4 years, but the 2001 New beetle was horrible. All electrical issues, some pretty serious.
Took a bath on that car, but had to drop it when the warranty ran out.
I really like the Jetta Wagon, but I rad that they also have some electrical problems, so I'm staying away for now. |

A co=worker in the late '80s/early '90s had many problems with her Jetta... wouldn't start, headlights going out, total dead electrical. Two Jettas, actually.
My wife's Scirocco in the '90s was so bad she eventually parked it and called the junkyards to pick it up for free. Not worth the lost work and expenses when the dealer replaced crap that didn't fix anything. |

Interesting, my GF's daughter screwed up and bought a 2003 Jetta. It's been in the shop CONSTANTLY. Mainly electrical issues as well. She's looking to dump it soon. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

False:
Daily Finance wrote: |
BERLIN and MILAN -- Fiat Chrysler has denied a magazine report saying it's in merger talks with Volkswagen, while the German carmaker said it had no takeovers on its agenda.
A VW spokesman said Europe's biggest carmaker was focused on delivering improvements at its existing operations.
"There are currently no [merger and acquisition] projects on the agenda," he said. "We are now focusing on boosting efficiency across the group."
Rather than talking about further expansion, top managers at VW -- concerned that profitability gains aren't keeping pace with the company's steadily growing size -- have been pushing a new efficiency program that includes 5 billion euros of cost cuts per year at the core passenger car brand.
Earlier this month, VW also denied a report it was planning a bid for U.S. truck maker Paccar next year. |
Taking over Fiat Chrysler... not a wise investment move. The Volkswagen Group has more than enough brands under its roof. _________________ ~Kamz

I don't think it's likely either, but if you Google "VW Porsche Merger" you'll see they denied that was being discussed and said there was no truth to it right up to the day they announced it was a done deal. |

Would have been interesting for VW and Fiat to merge when they were both selling air-cooled cars en masse. There could have been some neat cross-pollination. _________________ 1974 Thing -- under the knife

i wouldn't call this a "modern" problem, nor is it limited to VWs.
auto electrics are one of those uniquely german paradoxes that work great on paper, but when put into practice...not so much.
electrics have always been and will continue to be the bane of the german car manufacturer _________________ 88 Van WBX, A/T - 13 JSW TDI 6M/T - 2012 Touareg TDI Sport |

Every car manufacturer.,.. has problems.. no matter the brand.. or model
Im thankful for that.....
VW started going down hill when they merged with Audi....
Of course.. .. the Audi's got better.. hmmm...
Think about it... 1964-65.. ish.. Vw after the merge.... big windows.. the 1967's and all the fat chicks that followed and that thinking oooozed over to every model....
