yay, got the bearing and races in... used the trick with the old races, worked like a charm.

(patience is required in getting the old ones out tho)

Now, I have another question... check the pics below and notice the stress fractures in the space between the inner and outer bearings in the drum.
I take it this is a bad thing? I reinstalled the drum as I don't have another..I'm just wondering HOW bad this is? Drum fly apart maybe? Shocked

If they are cracked you should be looking for another drum, that line in the top picture looks to be a mark from the sand casting when they made the drum.

I agree, that's the casting line, but there are numerous cracks all around that center area. Sad

Time to replace the drums now I guess.

thanks to all who helped in this little project Smile

Not to hijack the OP's thread but since my question is related, I thought I'd ask it here.

I've been going through front wheel bearings like crazy. We run a B/J spindle and disc brake setup on the Kick-Out-S.S. and just before the ECVW trip, I swapped them out with new FAG brand bearings and brand new grease. The rollers in the bearings were pitted. I also replaced both races.

Half way on our 7,700 mile trip, I had to replace both bearings again with badly pitted rollers.

Could a bent spindle be causing this problem? I know the outter spinle shaft is undersized by about .005 and I tried the center punch trick but it's still a litle loose.

We never overtighten and always clean and use new grease when changing the bearings. As I got home, I could tell that the bearings have started to go bad again but I have not yet pulled it off to check.

What else could be causing premature and frequent bearing failures?
Thanks.

With it beeing both sides and only the outers , I would not think bent spindle
Maybe bearing quality , but I thought FAG was good
Front wheel off set / load ?
Type of wheel grease ?
Good luck on finding this one

After the drive in to work yesterday, I noticed now my front brakes catch momentarily to the drivers side...but not every time.

Best I can recall I did nothing to the brakes, except take off the plate hah.

VW gremlins, I remember those from years ago also Very Happy
