After my 1967 Splitty Project ( http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=539202&highlight= ), I told myself to give myself a big brake or this year for any vw project considering that I got so stress last year painting the Split bus every weekend just to have it entered in the ve showns last year and this year too.
Henceforth, for about two quarters of this year, I was idle for a while. AS such, I was surfing theSamba.com I came across that kubelwagen replicas that were being made at home. It kinda gave be an idea for my next project. So I did my research and everything in bettween until I got accustomed to the ins and outs of the kubelwagen. I have decided to do my own version at home.
Until, I fellow vw friend of mind all of a sudden decided to sell this just finished kubelwagen replica which was made last year. The kubelwagen was sound although it lacked some details to make it a true replica. A deal was made and I am now the new keeper of the Kubelwagen. The Replica was done accordingly although some portions needs to be redone to get it close to the original. Nevertheless, it is so sad to note that the one how did the panels and welding the same piece by piece met his untimely demise.
This one seats on a later model chasis with ball joint front end. Future plan to install a reduciton gear box at the rear and raised spindles up front.
These are some of the pictures of the replica which I will still made some missing details, like the roof mechanism, fromt he rear hooks and spetters, jack and tools and shovel mountings points, etc.
I guess, there is no such a thing called vacation for a vw aficionado!
The Kubelwagen seating there for almosst months.
The dash needs some detailing and I will redo it soon.
The doors are okay and some details thereon are quite impressive.
The kubelwagen needs some gasoline for us to travel back home to her new house.
The stance is quite okay.
The tanks looks pretty cool.
We had minor trouble onthe road. It was addressed in no time!
The exhaust and mufflers are okay to be, although I will ahve it revised soon.
The compartment area is clear although it is not as deep as the original considering that there was no bump should the transmission will be checked.
The front ends look so cool.. So unique!
The engine compertment needs lots of detailing..
Our Kubelwagen is one with our other veedubs!
The Kubelwagen now shares the garage! _________________ '67 KG Cabrio (Mickey) ;

Looks like a LOT of fun! But in my opinion it really needs wide 5 wheels on it. Those slotted 4 lugs just look really out of place. _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |

This weekend, I fabricated the roof frame of the Kubelwagen. It was really difficult considering that I had only pictures that I got from the internet and everything was cut and drilled carefully.
I bought these flat bar for the frame and 1/2 size tubing for the bows.
These round head bolts and the electric tubing clamps that I used for the project.
Got these from the nearby hardware depot. Although I will fab a more similar looking pivot holder in the future.
After getting some measurements, I then sstarted to cut the flat bar. Measurements played a mojor part of this project.
The pivot frame near the middle post of the doors.
After drilling the tightening the bolts and nuts.
The main bow. There are three bows that I brought to the nearly shop for the welder to apply some heat to the 1/2 tubing to be bent according to my measurements.
Trying to make a dry run of the roof frame mechanism. There were lot of adjustments to be done here!
This one is folded down. Still missing the middle bow!
"Raise the Roof!"
The finsihed one!
The roof frame is attached to the wind shield frame. Next I will install the wood for the windsheld and the locking mechanisms. _________________ '67 KG Cabrio (Mickey) ;

Nice job of getting it to work. I'm getting ready to rebuild the frame for my Kooble Kar. They used 19mm wide x 3mm thick metal for the side pieces and it is too flimsy. I took a lot of pictures of the mechanism froma real Kubel & am going to buy thicker metal and make replacement bars.
Next is to make a new top. The previous owner let the Kar set outside and the weather has rotted the canvas. I'll use the old top as a pattern to make the new one. Do you have a pattern for yours yet?

Nicely done! But I think I'd call a "do-over" on this bow:

thanks so much buddy. My only bases are the pictures available on the net and countless measurement before one cutting. And finally I got it. Of course you can do it too! _________________ '67 KG Cabrio (Mickey) ;

I will be around 2 real Kubels next weekend (ww2 reenactment at Thunder over Michigan). If there are any dimensions you'd like me to measure, just let me know. Two guys in my reenacting unit have real ones...a '44 & a '45.

That would be great. I would really appreciate it if you can get the actual dimensions. Thanks in advance and enjoy the reenactment

I did some fabrication at home to complete the details of the Kubel.
Firstly I replaced the EMPI accelarator roller into a more authentic Kubel Style Roller.
This came from one of the wheels of the plastic container box where we usually store our vw stuff and organize them.
Be removing the excess entensions from both sides and drilling the hole to accomodate the EMPI's bolt, it looks more kubel's accelerator roller pedal.
Secondly, the license plate must be replcated to its original looking position.
Since Philippines' license plates are rectangular in shape, I just adopted its width so that it will look better.
Drilling and making the allignments are like nightmare. One wrong measurement then you are doomed.
The finished one...
Thirdly, I drilled a hole to accomodate a crank handle that came from a floor jack handle.
Drilling this one is really tricky! The allignment also place a meyor role.
A closer look! _________________ '67 KG Cabrio (Mickey) ;

I also fabricated the JerryCan Holder:
The finsihed one. I wil paint the Jerrycan soon.
I also made the shovel holder:
The Seats had to be revised in the original style.
Without the upholstery.
This chain was removed to be used as the holder for the ends of the spings.
The finsihed one.
Next on the list is the Horn bracket.
Finished one.
The Africa Korps Style Air Cleaner is next. I will install this one this weekend.
The German Style Blackout light Notex was also fabricated. Although I will revised this one in the future I made it a bit smaller than the original one.
The doner parts
getting thiose windows look better.
With the one installed. I this may not be functional, but it give me the feel of a cool Kubelwagen replica. I will make another bigger one. But for the mean time, this will be my German Notek. _________________ '67 KG Cabrio (Mickey) ;

This weekedn I was budy again completing the details of the Kubelwagen replica.
I bought to stainless elbow for the Africa Korps style air cleaner.
It was buffs to remove the welding. THough I will paint this one in the future.
With the Africa Korps style air cleaner installed. It looks better compared to the air cleaner of the Country Buggy I installed when I got it.
The two tips of the tail pipes had to be revised too to copy the original.
This one has a longer tail pipe just like to original type 82.
I also made a wooden tool box which is secured on the right side of the engine bay. I also installed a self locking click just like the original.
These towing hooks I installed was only temporary because I need to drill holes on the body panel and fix it inside. But, for now, it's quite okay.
I removed the cover at the front of the foot rest. I will install a shelf for the jerry can.
Just this morning I happened to find this NOS hella tail light reflector that I will used as the haging reflector for the Kubelwagen replica.
A picture of the reflector with the hella logo on it! _________________ '67 KG Cabrio (Mickey) ;

Hey, buddy!. I though I was on vacation for the veedubing scene this year. But, this kubelwagen replica kept me awake for quite a while. And upon acquiring it, I was back again on the drawing board and is ready to gease up my hands, basically, every weekend! As the saying goes, "there is no vacation for a true veedub freak!" And I am guilty of that one!
I just checked your kombi! OMG, it looked really awesome! With the look of your splitty, i was toying with the idea of installing the stock rims on my splitty and installing my extra Fram classic filters!... Awesome job, buddy! _________________ '67 KG Cabrio (Mickey) ;
