If only he was closer to me I'd be picking up parts for the Bus right now. Unfortunately, it's local pick up only Sad

So Dan returned from his Treffen 16 run in his 58 Bug last week, he drove from Sacramento to Blaine WA on the US/Canadian border, then drove down Highway 1 to Dan Diego, to the US/Mexican border. Then drove his little Bug all the way back to Sacramento. It was 2,800 miles completed over two weeks.

So this weekend it was time to get back to fixing the Bus.

We are still waiting to hear from the insurance company on what value they place on the Bus. In the meantime, he got to work:

Waiting on a patch panel to weld this back up. The P/O cut this in the side of the Bus to fit an external oil cooler, it had to be one of the ugliest mods he did to the Bus.

Meanwhile, he spent a long time fishing out this metal from the Manifold. The metal was part of the carb that melted in the fire. The 71 Manifold was a one year only item, you can see the vacuum pipe in the middle that is attached to the Power Assisted brakes. So we had to save this.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

He cleaned up the engine tin from a donor engine in a huge cleaner bath, then cleaned, sanded and painted the tinware. Looking pretty good:

Now when the fire started, it got into the cabin pretty quickly because the shelf over the engine was cut out (don't know why), and then pop riveted back in. Those rivets melted and let this shelf fall down and the fire then got into the cabin. Time to weld this back in completely so it's done properly. Here it is just tack welded in, it has now been welded all the way round and the welds ground and dressed:

I like the blazecut for the dollar to peace of mind ratio. Best of luck with your rebuild, and thanks for the cautionary tale.

Yep, that's what we are going to put in when the Bus is rebuilt. Thanks for the link.

The guy's have been busy today, they have already made a patch panel, and matched it to the original seam on the Bus. It's now been welded in, ready for dressing the weld.

Looks like its coming along nicely!

If the rear deck needs to be welded, maybe consider getting a hatch welded in (it came with one from the factory). You could even put in a larger vanagon hatch. It makes working on the engine 100x easier.

I'm fairly new to Busses, but I think (could be wrong though) it came from the factory with no hatch, just a solid sheet. The previous owner cut the sheet and then pop riveted in, which is why there was so much interior damage because the rivet melted and the sheet fell down allowing the fire into the passenger area. So we are taking it back to stock and welding the metal back in without a hatch.

Dan started to reassemble the engine ready for a test fire. Not lubed it all up yet, but they regularly turn the engine over.

We were finished with the Primer, so it was time to paint the engine bay in it's original color. Looking good. Might get the engine fired this weekend and maybe back in the Bus Smile

Work continues inside the Bus, the plan is to clean and sand the interior, them primer it and follow up with the factory white.

A friend joined Dan today to help out with sanding the interior:

The help of the VW community never ceases to amaze me.

Dan is still working on the Bus when time allows. But in the background, many people are sourcing and donating parts to help him rebuild the Bus.

Just in the last week, people have come forward to provide the following parts:

1. Front dash wiring loom
2. Rear flywheel tin
3. Dashboard
4. Windshield

Here's the latest part that a Mike Tarczy sourced for Dan. A brand new tinted windshield. Many thanks to Mike Tarczy and also Alfred from Honest Engine.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Bob, Dan and the team have been working hard to sand down the interior and exterior of the Bus. The plan is to paint the interior and exterior of the Bus back to the original White and to get it presentable to drive.
We are still awaiting the final valuation from the appraisal company. The Bus was inspected last Friday, so we should know how much Dan has to buy new parts to get Phoenix running again and back on the road.
