Because I'm working on my Bug, all the work has been done by Dan, Bob and a number of helpers. The rebuild is moving along nicely now.

Still waiting for the final insurance appraisal. The first estimate came back really, really low, so we pushed and got approval to have a 3rd party evaluate and appraise the Bus.

With luck we might hear back from them by the end of this week.

Quick update. The first appraisal came in low (and I mean low), so we requested another appraisal from a company called Appraisal Express who do appraisals for classic vehicles. The appraisal was agreed and paid for, by the insurance company.

They provided a report to the insurance company for what they considered a reasonable price as a replacement value for the Bus. The appraisal was more than double the first estimate then taxes and DMV fees were added on.

We retained ownership and title to the Bus, and did a buy back from the insurance company. So Dan now has a good chunk of money to start real work on the Bus.

This weekend they plan to re-install the motor into the Bus, then in a few weeks time we plan to tow it to a Bodywork shop to get the metal work addressed.

Onwards......

Im curious on the restoration of the bodywork, internal andexternal after the fire. Have you found any warping or similar in the panels. An old friend has always said never get a burnt out car to restore, the heat effects the melecular properties of the steel and it becomes more brittle. If you find anything of this either way, id be interested to know about it.

They are planning to finish the sanding inside the Bus today and then spray it white.

There is some warping on the roof, directly above the engine area, so we will need to get that hammered back into shape. We also had damage to the torsion rods that hold the rear hatch open.

As they got heated up, they lost their tension, so they were replaced with used ones yesterday. We also had warping on the engine deck lid which has also been replaced.

But for the most part the rear of the Bus is in pretty good shape. I've heard the same thing about fires making the metal brittle, but from the work we have carried out we haven't seen anything that we should be concerned about.
If the fire got to some structural areas, we might be worried, but so far we haven't had any concerns at all.

Moving along nicely. Sanded down the interior, then it was time to mask up the doors and jambs to paint the interior. Looks like it's been wrapped for Xmas Smile

Just a quick post.

Airheadparts have kindly stepped up to offer help to Dan get his Bus back on the road. Dan met a number of the airheadparts staff during the Treffen 15 last year and Treffen 16 this year and they heard about his Bus and the fire.

We (both myself and Dan), want to sincerely thank airheadparts for their generous offer to help.
Hopefully Dan's Bus will be ready for Treffen 17 next year and that I can ride along side him in my 1974 Standard Bug.

Great work!

This is an inspiration to my own burned bus... I don't even have the engine out yet...

I just read your thread. Your Bus is worth saving and not too bad.

We pulled my sons motor from the Bus two day's after the fire. We drained it, flushed out the motor and cleaned it up. Grabbed a few donor parts and put it back together and it runs just fine.

We plan to "pop" the roof section that was damaged later this week and then paint the cargo and front floor areas.

My son just placed a large order for ALL the door and window seals, so in a week or two, all the glass should be back in.

The dash is now in, so they can focus on getting the wiring sorted. The rear loom was burned in the fire, so they added a remote starter to get it running. So now they plan to re-wire the rear of the Bus.

Instrument cluster, glove box etc, still needs to go back in. Then it's off to the body shop to whip it back into shape. Then it's a DIY spray job.

Sure it won't look like it was from the factory, but it will look fine.

Two Big Boxes of seals arrived yesterday from Airheadparts, with a few other goodies as well. The box contained ALL new seals for the Bus, plus a new rubber floor mat and a wicker parcel shelf.

Now they can start putting all the windows back in.

All the floors were painted yesterday, just a simple coat of rustoleum paint:

Re-wiring of the front of the Bus started. It's not directly connected to the battery yet, still need to sort out the rear connections, but there's lights now!

Awsome ! I just read this thread and I have to say it is one of my favorite threads ever! It shows that the true VW enthusiasts are about and it hasnt died completely !! Bravo to all involved! I would like to personally shake each of your hands for coming together and helping out this young man. I wish Ihad known earlier of what was needed because I had a dash I would of donated for the cause. It warms my heart to see people come together and instead of having their hands out for monetary gain, which seems the direction the vw community has been heading lately...., they have them out to lend a honest hand. God bless you all and Thank you . Please keep us posted !!

Thanks for the kind words, Kevin. Dan is my son, and my wife and I cried with him when we first saw the Bus burned on Interstate I-80. You cannot believe how hard that was for us to see.

Bob and Kimberly were the primary folks who stepped up to the plate to help Dan rebuild his Bus, but many, many others stepped in to donate parts, time and effort. It still blows us away that folks just want to help.

People just turn up, roll-up their sleeves and get to work and it's truly inspiring to all.

We aren't finished yet. We are about 2-3 weeks away to get the Bus in for a brake and light inspection, then the Bus will be moving under its own power for the first time after the fire. Then we plan to drive it to a local shop for Bodywork repairs.
Then back to Bob and Kimberly's for paint (we even have a local guy who has offered to paint it in his own time), how awesome is that.

We still do need a few parts, most notably the rear door hatch, which was too damaged in the fire to save.
We also need front seats (we have some temporary seats for now which will do), plus the complete interior that we have to source from somewhere.

If anyone knows of a rear hatch door, seats and any interior parts for sale, please let us know!!!!

Onwards....................
