I'm not sure what I have gotten myself into, it's been pretty painful, every time I go to fix something, a different piece breaks (or more rusty body parts fall off)

So, I saw this picture last week

And thought I would kinda like it.

So I worked out a deal, and the GTI is now gone

And something different followed me home!

It runs well, but it's very rusty. I will definitely be honing my rust repair, body work and welding skills.

The worst of it is the slider track for the door is pretty much gone. Sad

Started it up, idled it around the house a few times, and was generally excited and scared about what's to come next!

Well I dug into the non existent brakes today. I'll be replacing all of the lines, hard and rubber, the master cylinder, both calipers and the rear cylinders. Not what I thought I needed to do, but the fonts are both seized, and there is a leak somewhere in the back. . I also welded a hinge onto my gas pedal since it was flopping on the floor. I drove it around the yard, the non stock front seats put me into the roof, it's definitely a different feeling to drive it.

My wife came over and helped me clean it up

Funny head liner, it needs to come down

Haha as much as I like sublime...

Nice looking bus though! Are you going to patch it a little at a time or go full restoration? Hopefully you can have some fun with it (after you patch that front floor!)

And the good news is, welding is a ton of fun Very Happy

Thanks!

I've been working on and driving Volkswagens since I was 19, but I have never had an air cooled til now! I'm not sure if this or my '82 diesel wins for the slowest though! Lol

I plan on making it drivable, then just running as is ( after removing the Flintstones mod), and fixing the panels as I get to them. Since pretty much the only thing that's left is the bed, I'm planning on going full width with it, an overhead cabinet in the back, wood paneling, and maybe some solar.

The main motivator for This project was to get the wife to camp with me! I need to make it usable as a protected comfortable place to sleep, then keep going! Lol

I love the pic of your wife jumping in and helping. Sounds like you have a good plan to replace the front floor and attack one rusty panel at a time.

Another option that you might consider is finding another bus from the dry SW US that's nut rusted but needs work and use the best parts of the each on the non-rusty bus. You'd be surprised how quickly you can spend BIG $ on fixing rust. The cost of panels and and especially your labor will quickly exceed a $1500-$3k non-rusty bus.

Just a thought as I've restored a convertible bug that was rusted as much as this bus. It took forever and I spent a fortune in panels, wire and hundreds of hours making it solid again.

Luckily that GTI I traded for this was a $500 car that I stripped the leather and 17" wheels with brand new tires out of for my TDI.
I pretty much got this bus for free. I know it will take time and money, but if the trade had not worked, It would be years before I ever had the chance to get my hands on one. I plan on making this safe, not pretty.

My wife is actually more excited about this than I am. She doesn't do much of the work, but she can clean! I'm a bit nervous, but I know I can do all of this work, I will probably make the floor panels, but for now I think I'm going to cut up an old mk2 hood, maybe some mk1 doors for patch panels

Just buy a front floor panel to repair that along with the doglegs. You'll be ahead of the game then with that repaired. For the slider track find a donor bus....

Repaint it the original green is my vote. The headliner is, ummm, different. If it is too much, you could just repaint. But good running and stopping is first. Good luck!

If you want it, it's yours, it's covered in some sort of paint ( the same stuff they brushed onto the interior). The paint they used is everywhere. And it's horrible. It's also torn in a million places. It's destroyed and won't be in my vehicle.

That's the plan, I really want one of those whole front panels I was poking around a bit more last night, it doesn't look like too bad of a job.

I'm pretty sure it started out as a light blue vehicle. The frame and bottom of the wheel wells have nice blue paint under the peeling undercoating.

I think I need all the luck I can get!

Yes... I really am very spoiled. Shocked

You have a long, interesting road ahead of you. Make safety and reliability your primary concern, and ignore such things as solar panels and headliners. That money is more wisely spent on... safety and reliability.

Congrats on the newish bus. You have the right attitude to get this thing in shape. Do you have the Bentley manual yet?

The blurry pic may be hiding some important details. The glass fuel filter is not liked by many as it can break and wreak havoc (fire), same goes for the fuel line up against the heat riser for the carb, that riser can get quite hot. Yhose look like braided fuel lines, they don't hold up well to modern fuels. Replace them with Gates Barricade or something similar. Not trying to bust your nut, these need to be attended to. A recently new bus owner had his burn for possibly the same things. Brakes, engine compartment then rust and stuff. Looking forward to your progress.

No Bentley at this point, I do have my Muir book ( first and second edition air and water cooled) but with the library of bentleys I have (mk1,2,3,4) I'm Sure I will have one soon.

I'll check the hoses when I got home, I'm in mexcio making Money to put into it! I think the hoses and stuff all looks very new. The PO said something about new heads and a bunch of other new stuff along with a freeway flyer trans.

Yes, if you will notice it exactly matches the painted headliner. And if you were Looking at it in person, you would see the brush strokes, bubbles and runs in the paint .

That is not the original color of the vehicle, of that I am quite sure. To that end, though, I don't care what color it was, I have a plan.
