|
|
HI
1)Is the spare tire tub removable on the walk thru busses?
2)easy to replace/install a new one?
3) Is possible for a walk thru to not have a spare tire tub installed from factory?
Trying to figure out what happened to my bus(removed cleanly or never had it in)
Thanks

Its spot welded in place, if you cut the spot welds and remove it you'll have a large hole needing patched.
I have never seen a walk through bus without a spare tire well. |

Its welded to the body, it can be drilled out and replaced if its rusted.
Often they are removed for a gas heater system, do you have duct work and an extra hole for the intake? Pictures will help.

They are not removed for the gas heater system shown. That is Eberspacher and fits with the w/t spare tire well.
They are removed for the S-W gas heater. |

Another Southwind heater photo:
Wow, didn't know there was an official block-off plate to use there.
My Bus has a piece of Sea Blue metal hacked out of another Bus...
My heater is missing so I blocked off those 2 holes with some expanding rubber stoppers from the hardware store - it seemed bad to have hot air being sucked in there.
You can see the Southwind ducting that goes into the passenger area here too _________________ How to Post Photos

Great thanks a lot.
And the hole has been patched to the left of the tank.
All these answers to all the questions! Relief!
Thanks for the tip on the hole patches Everett as well. |

Even without the Southwind conversion, those spare tire wells got monkeyed with regularly over the years. I had a '64 WT deluxe which had the well cut out for unknown reasons. Got a replacement well cut with a bit of the surrounding steel from a parts bus. I just put it in the hole, and it sat there just fine with a spare tire holding it in place. Came in handy to pull it out when changing the engine. Allowed access to that darned upper driver side engine mount nut. _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS

Great info, nice to know that a Eberspacher will fit without having to remove the spare tire well. The S-W heater looks like some kind of a Transformers reject. |

I have a 67 Westy walkthrough with no spare tire hole. My bus has it's fair share of hacks though. _________________ Central Jersey Volkswagen Society - President |

Yes, you probably also have a hole in your fire wall to the left of the gas tank. |
x2
Those two holes to the left of the engine area are classic signs of a one time S-W heater install.
Like they said, for the S-W heater, the spare tire well got removed.
I heard that a S-W heater works great. I like the looks of a Eberspacher better, though. Old timer VW mechanic I talked to said he installed a S-W heater a week back in the day. |

Your engine bay and engine are well done, INCAPPLES.
On that Stewart Warner brochure, how do they raise the spare tire: just use another lug hole and the bracket stays the same? |
