|

So I wanted to see what you all thought, here is the background.
I have a 71 Super, that I refurbished the engine, and restored the car. When I reinstalled the engine, it woudl make an aweful grinding sound in reverse. I thought maybe it was the front or rear shift bushing so I changed them both. It didn't help.
So I changed the transmission. I ordered a rebuilt freeway flyer from Mid America. They send you the transmission, sans the nose cone. I installed the original nose cone and reinstalled transmission and engine. Exact same noise as before.
I just took the car to AirKooled Kustoms here in Alabama. (Awesome Awesome Guys, I can't say enough good things about them) He looked at it, since I assumed I had the reverse lockout plate installed incorrectly. He played with it a bit, and after discussing it, think it is the levers in the nose cone, that reverse got pushed in a little when I changed the nose cones. He thinks I need to pull the engine, and trans, and reinstall nose cone. Your Thoughts? _________________ 71 SuperBeetle (5 year old restoration under refresh)

Nosecones are a wear item. Inspection, reconditioning (or replacing), and installation of the nosecone (and hockeystick) are a part of any rebuild.
Grinding going into reverse is rarely internal to the transaxle. It's usually clutch-related or pilot bearing .. possibly linkage. _________________ aka Pablo, Geary

I replaced all the 2 pushings for the shift linkage. It is a new clutch and throughout bearing. I adjusted the clutch using the 1" of play rule.
Could it be a clutch adjustment?
I understand the nose cone and hockey stick replacement, but when the engine was first pulled reverse worked, once it was reinstalled, I have had this wierd grinding noise in revers. I am just wondering if I have something adjust wrong before I pull the engine and trans yet again. _________________ 71 SuperBeetle (5 year old restoration under refresh)

tap second gear first to slow or stop the rotating mass with it's synchronizer
kinda like we do before we put it in first
is it grinding going into gear with the clutch in
is it grinding instead of moving
or is it grinding like somebody dropped a handfull of rocks in an apparatus?
what is grinding
like a coffee grinding
grindingwheel grinding?
metal sparks grinding
or just like an unsycronized gearset trying to engage? |

Having your idle speed set too high can lead to grinding when shifting to Reverse... what's your idle set at? _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

Ah this could be one issue my idle is set high.
It't a screeching grinding and I think it is there even with the clutch in...
Thanks again for all the help!! _________________ 71 SuperBeetle (5 year old restoration under refresh)

So here is an update:
I pulled the transmission with the intent to put a new nosecone and shift lever (hockey stick). I could not get the new shift lever into the new nose cone, and I couldn't get the old shiftlever into the new nose cone. There was quite a bit of play with the old nose cone and shift lever. There was much less play with the old nose cone and new shift lever.
However, I think I have the issue: comparing the old shift lever to the new shift lever, the end is pushed in about 1/4 inch on the old one.
I just put the engine back in and I am in the process of syncing the carbs, howeer I did push in the clutch and shifted in reverse with no noise - so things are looking really promising. _________________ 71 SuperBeetle (5 year old restoration under refresh)
