|
|
Hey Guys, I recently purchased a 65 Beetle with some 68 electrical components and other parts installed for what ever reason. My turn signals are not working or hooked up. I had someone diagnose the problem, he states the Steering Column complete has been swapped to a 68(with the Ignition Key built in), and that year turn signal switch will not adapt to a my 65 harness. My question is, will a 65 turn signal switch fit the later model steering column?, or do I have to replace the whole column back to the correct year fitment? OR is there a way to wire the 68 switch to be able work? Thx for looking! |

What does he mean it won't adapt? I am guessing that what he means is that the 68 switch on the column will not plug into the 65 flasher relay, which could very well be the case. You may need to get a 68 flasher relay and wire the leads for the signals into that replacing the 65 relay. Wiring could be a bit of an issue because things like the turn signals route through the ignition. With that relocated other issues could also come up. |

All I know is that a 65 wiring harness is very basic and may not match up to the 68 equipment. If you determine it won't I suggest biting the bullet and getting a 65 steering column and assessories to match your car like the PO should have.
Sorry no easy answer for your issue. Bad PO. _________________ "Sic Vic Pacem, Para bellum - Pray for peace, prepare for war."

Its wires... and switches.. it can be made to work if you can read a schematic. Yes you may have to add some extra hidden parts... but.... thats no big deal.
If you care nothing about E flashers... its even easier..

I think first you need to make sure the column was swapped and that you just don't have one of those cool, rare optional locking columns.
Posting up a couple pictures of what you have may help someone here to identify the year.
You could also stuff your head behind the left front tire and see if the bottom end of the steering column where it meets the rag joint is the collapsible expanded steel mesh (6 or a straight shaft (65). _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch!

Hmm, not sure where that smiley face came from. Must be some sort of computer code. It was a 68 in parentheses.
Anyway, a lot can happen over the 50 years since the car rolled out the factory doors. How many 50 year olds do you know who still have all their original parts?
If you can post a couple pictures that would be a big help. _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |
