|
|
Is there any advantages or drawbacks to using these?
Two of my front fenders have pretty bad dings and found some that are 4.5" wider in the rear and 3" wider in the front for sale....
The buyer "said" he paid $1100 for the set of 4 and running boards...
He wants $600.
They also come with the early style light housing which I prefer. What do y'all think? 4 new non dented fenders for $600 seems like a pretty good deal to me?
Thanks for any input |

Drawbacks? They are fiberglass so they will crack if they get leaned on. You will also have to run ground wires to all your light fixtures. _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |

Oh yeah, would have to run grounds...not a big deal but I forgot about that. He said $1100 for the fenders and running boards shipped.
How is the fit of these? Are they pretty crappy like all of the other aftermarket pieces?
I would also have to run wide wheels which I'm not too sure if I want that.
He lives 5 miles from me but I think I'll bail out on this deal. He also mentioned he just dropped the price so I need to get them fast or someone else will buy them.
I don't buy into pressure tactics. |

$520 for a full set of NEW ones from the link Volkswagenut posted.
Personally I wouldn't rush into anything.
Steel fenders can be welded, repaired, and straightened. Fiberglass stuff needs to be glassed and glued. _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |

Really? I see $180/fender X 4 + running boards + shopping and handling.
Where do you get that price?
Either way that's the exact same fenders/company he got them from. Thy just look too wide and a little goofy.
I really only want 2 of the older '66 and down older style fenders. I always liked the "laid back" headlight style better. |

If its just the old look you're after... not the fat look..
Just buy a set of steel reproductions.... no they are not "German", but unless you plan to do fender acrobatics.... they work just fine...
Just make sure they match, headlight and grille positions.
If the fat look is what you're after.... its limited choices.. plus then you have to deal with the bumpers...
The old saying goes..

C'mon now. Really? It depends on the manufacturer and the thickness of their product. You know this.
Half nekkid models lean and lie on top of my cousins' '63 Corvette at Hot Rod shows all day long. His only concern is the butt and handprints. |

Smoking causes lung cancer
Smog attributes to global warming
Jerking off excessively causes you to go blind
Seriously, by your generalization no one should ever invest time, money, and effort into Porsche 356 replicas, Manx bodied buggies, ...... BOATS, etc. Cuz they're all suckers.
Overtightening head bolts can crack an engine block. The point is?
Do you know carbon fiber can also crack? I wonder why folks choose to replace metal body parts with this lighter and more durable material? |

Dauz if that was directed at me.. I am just relaying my personal experience with fiberglass fenders. I lived on a 1/4 mile long gravel driveway, and I ended up with star cracks from rocks being thrown off the tires. I overtightened a few bolts, and cracked the fenders through the flange and up into the exterior surface of the fender (I painted the fenders before assembly). Yes they saved me many many hours of fixing dents. Yes they saved me lots of money trying to find mint orig or nos steel fenders. But I was never happy with them. I also always felt that part of my ride "wasn't real".
Anyway that was my experience, and my opinion. Your results may vary. _________________ Chris

If you're gonna go fiberglass shop for some undercoating made for it to help keep things together and vibrations down. Personally, I would only go fiber on the decklid, maybe full fiber front too _________________ "So didja?" -Bob Hoover |

You guys carried on after I said I passed on the deal......
Hahaha...
Good points though and certainly agree with what you are saying. It would be kinda silly to have 10" wide rims on my stock 1600 motor. Talk about a slug!
And the 4" wide fenders would just be too damn wide for my taste. |

It's amazing how threads can often take on a life of their own after you give birth to them .. Unfortunately, sometimes they veer off into strange and unexpected territory |

Sure, that's why Formula 1 race car chassis are made out of carbon fiber. Along with parts/panels in the BMW M6, Corvette ZR1, and Audi R8. That Honda shit isn't real carbon fiber. But you're right, it does look cool
