Do you show your Ghia open or closed?
When I look at other cars (any make) at shows I like it open so I can take it all in.
At concours events they are usually kept closed until they are judged. I have only participated in two events like this.
So, for other events I always display with the hood, trunk and windows open. At VW specific shows I'm fairly confident that most are equally interested in the engine and trunk detail. However, when it comes to all makes shows I feel a bit conflicted as to how to display, especially when I participate in "displayed only" non-judged shows.
The Ghia's lines are really messed up when it's is opened up. Most VW people know what they look like. Non-VW people may find it difficult to appreciate the form. I do display a photo of it closed. I don't necessarily want to stand by the car all day opening and closing it. I know it's a dumb thing to obsess about but that's what I do Laughing
Thoughts? And no need to comment on my mental state Very Happy

Well I don't do judged shows so the Ghia is shut...not locked but I do like to show off the beautiful lines of the car. The one exception to "closed" is if I'm around at the time I'll open the engine lid to show them something unique in the Ghia world. Wink

Sometimes it can be funny to eavesdrop on conversations as they hover over the engine bay.

I don't own a Ghia but I agree you definitely want to show it closed at an all-makes show because I think those sensuous lines are the defining quality of a Ghia. As I think back at all the ads I've seen for Ghias, I can't remember more than maybe one that showed the engine lid open, compared to all the ones for Beetles and Buses.

Thanks for the input, folks!

I'm entering my Ghia just for the fun of it into a car show in my small, MN town down here in a couple weeks. Just $10 to enter. The top prizes are labeled things like "Best Ford," "Best Chevy" and "Best Mopar."

I'll keep everything closed except the windows. I'm sure she'll be a unique piece of eye candy that way Smile

Good idea, the VW smell thru the open windows will gain you points from anyone who grew up with one. Cool

That isn't the heart of the central vacuum cleaner system? Handy for addressing the crumbs in the upholstery after tea and crumpets.

Haha yeah my mate calls it a washing machine. Actually it's a British Shorrock Supercharger...marketed by EMPI in their 1966 & '67 catalog...

Closed, like a Concours. Open the lid(s) on request.

I totally agree, displaying the cars with the lids open lacks class. It also seems to me to reinforce a certain image outsiders have of vintage Volkswagens: "Oh look, honey: there's a bunch of them, all like the one we saw on the side of the road..."

Hilarious!!
Thanks for all the replies. Closed seems to be preferred.
Perhaps a photo of the engine bay incorporated into my display?

Maybe one of those scrolling digital picture frames with pictures of before - restoration - and detail shots of engine trunk and interior finished.

Looks like we have to be the contrarians... We don't have many local VW-only shows, so we generally go the all-makes shows. For those, and the local "cars & coffee" events, the convention is to open the engine lid - which we follow. Ours is just on the wrong side of the car... Or maybe their's are...

Also, after we drive up and people hear it, they usually want to see what's inside... Particularly for the cars & coffee events.

The Ghia's lines are still obvious with the engine lid up. But, we also prettied up the engine compartment, to help...

Trunk lid down. The car does look worse with the trunk lid up. Except for the VW shows, where they judge the trunk and don't give warning when they are about to come by. Convertible top down, not half-way down like we see some cars. Except again for the VW shows, where they like to see the top. VW shows seem to be particular around here, they also seem to like people to have displays...

Following these guidelines, we've won a couple of "Best Import" prizes. One just this past weekend. Pic's in our gallery, for those who are interested.

From what I've often been told, most people put those "Porsh" motors in them.
