Ok fellas, need your help....
Putting new axle seals on my swing axle tranny. What is the trick to getting them in without destroying them?
BTW, it's the seal that's pressed in the seal housing that bolts on the end of the axle tube. |

You need something large as the seal is across, and flat to press, or tap the seal in without distorting it. I used a piece of plate steel last time, and set the bearing retainer flat on my welding table. Tapped around in a circle, after smearing just a little bit of sealer on the outside of the seal. Soon as the seal is flush with the retainer, your done. |

I used a flat object as suggested above, them squeezed them in using the jaws of a vice. The vice kept it square as it went in. _________________ 1958 Karmann Ghia owner |

This guy makes it look easy, fast forward 5 min. into the video he uses a 46 mm socket and slowly taps around.

In the past I've used the old seals to press the new seals partway in and then finished with a correctly sized socket.... Tiny bit of grease helps. |

My problem has always been those STUPID paper gaskets that go behind the retaining plate, they NEVER fit and don't seal worth a shit. _________________ Build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=212747
