Have had problems with shifting since someone replaced trans. When I got it back it was very hard to shift into first gear. After tearing it apart it seemed that the shift rod was somehow shortened and wasn't centered in neutral through the hole for the shifter.Replaced shift rod(slotted)with adjustment and centered everything up and lengthened the shift tube to where it should be.Also replaced shift plate(late),original was pre "69" but was severely beaten up.Also the original shifter was just the ball type,no pin.None of that worked,so I found a new shifter assembly with the pin on the ball and old style shift plate and installed it and everything was worse, now first and second gear are hard to get in and have no reverse.I notice that if I go through the gears while the trike is off without pushing in the clutch ,all the gears seem fine, except for reverse which seems to not even be there even though I had it after trans replacement. After starting and pulling out everything jams up again and hard to shift into 1st and 2nd,leave sit, repeat, change back to other shift plate, same problem, but only in first.Shift coupler is fine,or seems to be when shifting without the clutch while sitting still its fine.Currently the original shifter without pin and paired with the slotted shift tube and late shift plate is working better, but not right, really stumped and don't know what else to try.Any help with this problem greatly appreciated |

Well to answer my own ??? and possibly help someone else out.The clutch was way to tight. While sitting the shift pattern was easy and right, after running or running the centrifugal force was enough to expand and left no room between flywheel and pressure plate.Still no reverse, but I think the remedy to that is the old shift plate as it will give it more room to slide to the right and catch reverse.Hope it helps someone else that don't know much about vw's like myself.
