Hello wanted to introduce myself here and show off my new 86 Sycnro I just pickup from fellow samba member from pensaloca fl. I hashed out the deal with him and sent someone to trailer it home for me. It is alot nicer than expected so very pleased so far. I sold my 61 spilt window to get the 4wheel and heat and more all purpose van. The spilt window has it beat on persoanlity and sheer acelartion.

This is how is looked when I got it very little rust. Pretty straight and nice interior. Car orginally was from Bend, Oregan. The van spent most of it life on the west coast, Cali and Orgen. Owned by former Forest service employee. She took very good care of this van.

Here is pic of when I recieved it. I has to install a shift pad set and still have trouble with 1st and second. Starter was causing issues, I think from not being used.

I am planning on keep it running and enjoying it. I have new bumpers and wheels and tires coming.

I will keep the pics coming.

Looks way nicer than the one I ended up with. Time to test the VC and see if you actually got a 4WD syncro. Unfortunately I did not. Thanks to my job and Matt at AA, I have a rebuilt one with a Peloquin locker on the way. Nice looking ride.

Thanks for the coment on th upgrade, that was my whole intention on selling the spilt to get the syncro.

I want to pickup a de coupler for the front transaxle then test the VC coupler.

Thanks for the feedback.

I tinkered with the shift rod and now getting 1st and 2nd and reverse. All shift buhings look good and new tabs on the shifter arm.

I installed the rocky moutain westy bumper today and now i can put my bike rack on. Also put on the roof rack cross bars. Wheels next.
Starting to have some character.

Had the windows tinted today. I like how it turned out. I am thinking about painting the trim black around the sliders.

Do your research on the decoupler. They are not all equal! Mine will come out of Germany.

all rubber ages, but another issue with the fuel lines is the exposure to EtOH in modern fuels - that can rot them quickly

dunno which of the many threads is best but you need to replace all of them with EtOH rated barrier hose and ensure the proper clamps are used (they don't cut into the hose like garden variety hardware store clamps do)

get the injectors cleaned too

check the date code on the tires - 6 years max no matter what mileage

the other critical safety issue is the brake hoses - replace with new factory rubber & flush out the old fluid with new every 2-3 years

I am not an expert, but you don't need a decoupler to test the FWD on a syncro. The decoupler does not eliminate the viscous clutch unless you physically remove the viscous clutch and replace it with a fixed shaft in which case you would need a decoupler so that you could drive it on pavement. You can run a decoupler with a VC.

Testing is all over the internet including some videos. Here is a link to get you started.

edit: I find it interesting that the driveshaft was removed when you purchased it and you are being told it has a new VC. Good luck. My syncro came with the driveshaft installed but would not pass any tests. Here is what I found.

This is the AFU ( All F'd Up) option that came after years of babying.

Derek turned me on to a really cool listening device years ago that attaches to the trans and diff.
It is a remote unit that hooks to my Snap On scanner and broadcasts the internal sounds while driving / testing.
It would have pegged this issue for sure during the VC test.
