A friend at work has a 79 911. He checked the compression a while ago and it was OK in all cylinders. The other day he started it and he said it REALLY was smoking bad, burning oil in BIG clouds.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,

Has the car been sitting for a long time? Oil tends to collect in the exhaust system in cars that sit for long periods. Takes some time to burn it off.
There are many other possible causes. |

If coming from the tail pipe, i would suspect oil level too high, or engine has "wet Sumped", ie. most of the oil has drained from the tank into the crankcase & some has gone past the piston rings. |

Thanks for the advice! I talked with him the other day and he did say the car has sat for a while, so maybe either of these might be the case.
Any good way to drain the oil out of the exhaust, short of drilling a "drain hole", if this is the case?
I was thinking that however the oil drains back from the heads to the crankcase might have some blockage and the heads might be filling up with oil and leaking past the valve seals, but I really don't know much about Porsches (except that I want one).

It does not take much oil to make a huge cloud. Have him drive it for about 20 minutes. If it is just oil leaking by the piston rings it should resolve itself. Be sure he has a fire extinguisher in case the stuff ignites. _________________ 1970 Deluxe Sunroof Bay Brilliant Blue/Cloud White
