Seems so long ago but not really for someone like me in their '50s. I remember as a kid WWI vets in parades. The father of one of my dad's childhood friends giving me a 48 star flag that came of the casket of a dead WWI soldier who was a relative He gave me some coins too that were sent back, a gas mask and some other stuff. My maternal grandmother fought in that stupid war as Alpini in the Italian Army, forced into it when he was 16. My grandmother's village in Friuli was overrun by Germans and Austro-Hungarians and she told us stories if Russian POWs begging for food and about hiding the older sisters from the soldiers and the sound of artillery in the night. Anyone who thinks war is glorious or cool or warranted except in the most extreme of circumstances should have to have gone through what my grandparents went through.
