Here is yesterday's impulse purchase. I'm over the moon on having spotted it and pulled the trigger.

I'm not sure where to begin, I will have many, many questions in the future, I just felt like I should post a picture first.

The funny thing about this post is that Mike used to have chickens and sell eggs- guess what he sold them out of? Laughing

Went on my first real drive with it last night. About 2 1/2 hour round trip including long distances on the highway. I was very impressed with the performance, got it up to 80, and there was still some room left, and it tracked well in a straight line.

The first thing I really need to investigate and correct is the air control. It seems that I cannot completely shut down the heat, and the cabin got pretty warm. It mostly was coming in from the left side of the window behind the dash.

I ordered the workshop manual today, and I am hoping that there are good diagrams of how this whole heating and cooling system is supposed to be Smile

The other thing that concerned me was the transmission. This is an automatic, and when I would take my foot off the accelerator, I would often hear a thunk as it was downshifting, and sometimes would even get a bit of tire squeak as the rpms would change.

I predict a transmission rebuild in my future, and have seen the term Freeway Flyer on this site a bit. I am assuming that is the preferred transmission upgrade?

No, no, no, no, no, NO.

Keep it Automatic! Your pan isn't set up with a clutch cable tube anyways.

Most likely, you just need to get it to a trans guy with a pressure gauge set and adjust or replace the vacuum modulator. All of the pressures and the test procedures are shown in the Bentley repair manual which is hopefully what you ordered.

Here's your gauge set if you want to try it yourself:

A good Automatic is a joy to drive, and people are just starting to appreciate them. Rebuild parts are still available. Roll with it! Very Happy

The automatic also has the lowest ratio highway gearing!

I wouldn't jump the gun and just assume there's something wrong with the transmission. As Tram says it might just need adjustment. Also your car was almost certainly originally fuel injected, and the modulator valve is different than that for carbureted cars.

Also, I'd get that plastic fuel filter out of the engine compartment as soon as possible. Under the tank would be a much better spot, as it was originally.

Also please get rid of those blue 25 amp fuses, which are of much too great a capacity. They could allow too much current to pass and your nice car could go up in smoke. Shocked Your car should only have red 16 amp or white 8 amp fuses. Here's a link to the 1969 wiring diagram:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/wiring/type3_6870.jpg

Somebody's hacked at the wiring -- there's a red wire hooked up via a shade-tree connection on one of your fuses:

I'm not trying to be a downer, but I've had a car burn up while I was driving it. Yours a fine looking car. Enjoy it!

Oh, and the car is no longer fuel injected? Damn. I'll bet you don't have a kickdown switch either, then.

It's a little blurry, but I don't see one.

I'm wondering if there's even a correct vac source for the modulator!

Me too. On a dual carb car, does the modulator vacuum come from one or both carbs?
