I was very fortunate to finally purchase a bus I've been hoping to get for over two years now. It's a very complete and unmolested '67 Westy. As you all probably know, splits are very difficult to find in the southeast in anywhere near this condition so I am ecstatic to say the least. This is my first split window bus and a lifelong dream realized.
It was picked up by an American couple in Germany and driven around Europe for a couple months before coming to the states as part of VW's Tourist Delivery Program. The faded stickers from their travels are still on the rear window. Here's the European tag. It also came with the manuals and service history book going up until '89 when it was parked.

Incredible!
I am bookmarking this thread in the hope of seeing more photos and updates over time.
I have one that is the same model and year - molested.
Amazing find, unicorn-ish. |

Thank you! It's still sinking in, the process for me to get this bus was a pretty complicated and taxing but totally worth it of course. I feel very lucky! |

Whoa sheesh.
Got the tent? I see the tent rail. I'm guessing mid year '67 model as the outlet hadn't been moved to the jump seat yet but yet it has the side inlet for power and back-up lights.
Care to reveal any details about how you found it etc.? |

The original owner's son said he would look for the tent. I also will have the roof rack in a few days. It is in a tree and the tree has started to grow around it so it will have to be cut out.
I spotted the bus on a very secluded country road a little over two years ago. Shocked of course to see a bus that clean, you simply don't see them here. I tried to contact the owners through various ways with no luck. I continued to check on the bus from time to time. Sometime within the last year I went to see if it was still there and it had been moved.
I reluctantly accepted the fact that I would never own this bus. Then, within the past couple weeks it popped up in an online ad. I couldn't believe it. It wasn't a good time at all for me to shell out a ton of money, in fact I didn't have the money, nowhere near it.
I again tried to accept that I wouldn't be able to get it but I went to see it anyway. The owners were getting tons of interest of course but liked the fact that I was local. And although I had to get rid of several of my most valuable possessions and scrounge up every last dime I could to buy it, I stepped up and would do it again. |

Amazing that it sat outside in Alabama and still looks that good. Nice save! _________________ "My biggest worry is that when I die, my wife will sell all my parts for what I told her I paid for them"-Jon

Can you get more history on the bus? Are the original owners still alive? Try to get any copies/scans of photos of trips, etc..
We have a split screen SO-34 Westie that was tourist delivery back in 1962. Have lots of water decals of places it went in Europe and N. America in the windows. Wish we could find the original owners in the Portland OR area to get the history... _________________ In Stereo, Where Available!

That is a great find and you really "did good" getting it out of the trees. WAY better than a "copynpaste" put together bus. Keep us buried in Pics and hope to see it at the show one day. _________________ some days I get up and just sit and think. Some days I just sit.

Keep that Campmobile! Do NOT sell it to all the folks about to "pm" you to death trying to get it from you! The "flippers" are hovering above you! Clean her up, get her healthy and driving, and go camping and enjoy your first Split-Bus. You are very lucky, keep that beauty, you'll never get that lucky twice!
Welcome to the SO-42 Campmobile club!

Great find, definitely hang on to it. My SO 42 is also a tourist edition bus so it's always interesting to look for any tidbits that were left behind from their adventures. Post the mcode plate so we can see what bits it should have. _________________ RPM=(MPH*336* (R&P*4th*1.26))/Tire Diameter in inches |

Thanks everyone for your kind words. The bus is not for sale, I'd like to hang on to this one for the long haul!

It was parked under a carport in 1989. It sat there most of the time since. For 4 years it sat with the front pushed out of the carport (which is why the nose and cab area is more rusty than the rear) and it sat totally out in the elements for approximately 4 years after that sometimes with a large tarp on it. If it had been totally uncovered in Alabama for 25 years it would be much much more rusty.
The steering is tight, the shifter is tight, the parking brake still works. It had a good deal of gas in the tank when parked so I will need a new tank. The engine ran well when parked according to the owner.
The original owner is 98 years old. The son is going to look for old photos of the bus and scan them for me if he finds any. |

Very nice find. Complete and original. As its been said, not easy to come by. I'm jealous. My 67 is very molested, but I enjoy every mile. Enjoy. _________________ -Jim DiGennaro, Samba lurker, Disc Jockey and LiMBO freak www.LiMBObus.org

Sometimes tanks with lots of gas left in them are still good and only need cleaning and a new screen. It is a special tank for that year. |

Started a little CLR treatment on the nose:
Here are a couple of the worst areas as far as rust goes:
Deep surface on front roof edge:
This rot is contained to the edge of the cargo floor thankfully. The underside appears to have been undercoated when new, the floors look to be mostly rust free from the underside.
Gave it a better wash:
Pulled up carpet to reveal this...
Used some paint cleaner/polish here. Haven't buffed it but it shows promise:

That would be nice. The PO told me it had pinholes in the bottom but I haven't checked it out. I thought it may be a good excuse to put a larger bay window tank in there or to just get a brand new one and skip some of the headache. I'll use this one it if its not too bad though. |

You get extra bonus points for having a pop-out ambulance step under your side cargo door! Definitely have them find that tent/pole/stakes set, and the Westy wood-slat roof rack. WTF? Up in a tree???. There has to be a weird story on that...
