Easy time to change gear oil. Easy time to change soft lines to rear brakes. Easy time to refresh axle boots. Take out cross shaft and lube. Repack or fresh throwout bearing and HD clips. New input seal. How are cradle mounts? Starter bushing if needed. Mark pressure plate and inspect along with disc and pilot grease. Inspect battery and harness grommets. Easy time to detail battery area. Easy time to detail taillight buckets. Easy time to do gas tank neck seal. + more. |

Thanks guys, I think I have a pretty comprehensive order now as far as getting what I need/can afford immediately. I always try to get as much as I can at once as shipping charges add up quick.
I have some NOS axle boots in the boxes that came with the bus. They still feel pliable so I think they would work fine. I kind of hate to use them but they are probably the best possible replacement. _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust." |

Thank you!
I was pulling the fuel line off the carb the other day and the inlet popped off! I'm glad it happened then and not while driving. I was thinking about doing this:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=7358080#7358080
Anybody done something similar? I don't want to worry about that thing popping off. _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust." |

Dunno if you saw this but I'm still wondering if. |

I saw it but forgot to check. I'll get back to you on that. Are you wondering what the original color would have been?
Would my frame have been shiny silver/grey originally? That's what it appears to be under the undercoating. _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust." |

Regarding the transaxle I'm wondering if it is all original and never been sent out or replaced. If it's never been removed then does it have factory paint on it and if so, what, i.e. matte black.
Your frame would have a gray finish with overspray from the body on it and some intentional lower body color. As far as gloss you'll have to ask the experts. |

Hello, just received my set of curtains listed above and they look really nice, cool packaging too. I don't have an original set of SO42 curtains to compare. Has anyone looked at these repos side by side with a set of OG curtains?
Even if they are off a little (at this time I have no indication they are not identical) they are well constructed and at a very reasonable price to boot.
Stuco, did you pick up a set?

I did. They look good. And I might just try cutting out the slits w/ an exacto/box cutter before I try flipping the tape over. _________________ One man's "patina" is another man's cancer...

Not yet, save a set for me guys! Every dime I have is going to mechanicals at the moment.
I had a request for better pics of the radio:

Well, I pulled the engine for the first time (my fist time ever)! It went well, I have it up on a table now to work on.
The thin pipe on the left that goes to the muffler is rotted through, can the bus be driven with that or do I need to replace it first?
I also removed the original tank. The Wolfsburg West tank arrived and looks really nice. I don't know if its just from age and rust but the metal on the stock tank is very thin. It bends like plastic. If you pick up and down on the neck that whole side flexes. It has two dime sized rust holes at least and is full of clay like gasoline. I won't be using it.
I also cleaned and rebuilt the carb and greased the front end. _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust."

Do they only sell the smaller size tank? or do they sell the bigger one like the one you just pulled out of your bus? |

They don't sell the "hump" tank. _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust." |

Thanks for that. It's all original and never been out, right?

Bad for it to drive with cold air near an exhaust valve. Replace the whole muffler with a German Ernst unit and the pipe is part of it. |

Thanks, I just read through your thread. I dig your bus! I saw the pics you posted of rust on your tank. That's kind of what mine looks like in a couple areas. The metal just looks thin too. I'll have to report on how well the WW tank works out but it looks very nice straight out of the box. If you end up having to get an aftermarket tank keep in mind that there are some other offerings of lesser quality that use the same part number. _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust."

As far as I know it has not been removed, my guess would be not but its hard to say for sure. I will look in the service history book again sometime and see what it says, I know it mentioned the engine being "resealed" at some point.
10-4 on the muffler, that's what I figured. Just wishful thinking. _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust."

Replace the muffler now. The heat riser tubes need to work to keep the intake manifold ice free. Plus ANY EXHAUST LEAK under the VW will result in carbon monoxide which can be sucked up thru any crack or hole in the body or into the engine compartment and passed on to the interior thru the heating system. Carbon Monoxide in even small amounts over time is a great way to loose brain cells.... _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Round shape top is 40 HP thru early 1500.
Pentagon shaped top is late 1500 thru 1600.
Warning: Do not throw your old diaphragm away. New rebuild kits have been reported with way too stiff of spring, causing too high of fuel pressure. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |
