Concerning your postcard...
Did some searches concerning the Raffay dealership and read quite a few results in both German and English.
Below is a Google-Translated link to an article from 2010 stating that name of the Raffay Dealerships in Hamburg would be changing to Volkswagen Automobile Hamburg GmbH.
The last line of the article about this 2010 name change is very telling; their start with VWs:
"The Second World War did not spare Raffay. In the end everything was in ruins. But in 1946 Raffay negotiated with the British occupation. With success: in 1947 the first Volkswagen arrived at Raffay - but only for nationals of the occupying power."
There's likely more details about the extensive car dealership of Hamburg when it was run and/or owned by folks with the Raffay name.
Here's a link to the article about the name change of 2010 (with Google Translation):

...and here it is in German:

...and here's a photo from TheSamba:
...and a 1950's drawing of the dealership from the internet:

I though it was way cool too! Thank you for doing that search, that is really neat to learn a little about this bus's travels and history!
The postcard cleaned up surprisingly well and I "laminated" it with some clear packing tape and put it in one of the owners manuals for safe keeping.
It's interesting some of the things they mention:
"directional lights right side crow? cracked"
Well the right side fried egg cover is cracked to this day, I replaced it but still have it.
"fine screen glass right side has cracked"
It sounds like one of the louvered window pieces had cracked maybe.
As far as the sound deadening goes. Let's just say there are quite a few opinions out there on the subject!
I ended up going with Reckhorn ABX.
http://www.amazon.com/Reckhorn-Self-adhesive-Deade...d+deadener
I wanted to avoid the home type products and low end auto products because they are high in asphalt.
Really this type of product is the first of a few steps in sound deadening. As tempting as it is to cover everything, it is only necessary to cover 25-30% of a panel for this step to work. I may cover more or all of the area over the engine and behind the bed since that's where most of the sound emanates from but I'm not sure yet.
Check out this quick demonstration, it explains what's happening (and why you don't have to cover every inch) better than I can:
Link
I'm going to use the home depot version of Mass Loaded Vinyl on top of that.
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Unbranded-4-ft-x-8-ft-Acoustical-Barrier-DB348X96BX/100663624
You are supposed to use decoupling layer between the two I think but I may not.
I will need to take the interior out again to do some body work at some point so I will finish the sound deadening and insulation of the rest of the bus at that time.
Thanks, I try to do updates for folks who enjoy them. I always like to see them on others' threads. I'm in north Alabama so I don't know if I'll be making any roadtrips that far but you never know! _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust." |

As tempting as it is to cover every inch of this area with the Reckhorn product, I'm going to go by the experts who say you only need to cover 30+ percent of a panel. At least for now. If this combined with the mass loaded vinyl doesn't cut down the noise significantly, I'll put more on there.
The upsides are that the material goes a lot farther and you can still see what's going on with your metal. If it's covered up you wouldn't know if rust were to form. Also, it's less added weight if that's a concern. A bus is may be more stable (albeit slower) with more weight though.
I can say that this has taken a lot of the drum like quality out of these areas. It's more of a thud now when you tap on it. For the record, the reckhorn has very little if any smell at all. It appears to be a quality product.

I put some strips of reckhorn in the driver's door, huge improvement.

I couldn't resist adding more of the dampener to the rear deck.
I also did used some velcro pieces to cut down on rattles in the cabinets. Seems to work quite well.

once the bed goes back in it will be REALLY quiet. I used to keep a piece of carpet under the mattress on the rear deck. has many advantages.
no humidity between mattress and deck, less noise, and if you take out the mattress to transport stuff in the back, you got something to put your stuff on. _________________ regards

I hope so. Before I did this I had the bed, a double layer of reflectix (foil backed bubble wrap) and a yoga mat on there. I also had carpet under the bed/seat.
All that helped but I'm hoping this step combined with the vinyl and maybe another layer will make a significant difference.
Something else that made a really noticeable difference was rubber backed carpet on the cargo floor. I'm going to get some more of that too, what was in there was ancient and falling apart. _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust." |

The door even feels better when you open and handle it, it's hard to explain but it's nice. It feels/sounds more like an old Mercedes door now, very satisfying for some reason. If you install the material (especially on a horizontal or vertical surface) and it's not warm outside you'll want to heat it and the metal up a little with a heat gun or hair dryer. I tried to do some when it was cold out and it didn't want to stick at all. Then I heated it up a little and you'd have trouble pulling it off if you wanted to. Don't melt it, just get it warm.
I drove the bus today after putting everything back together. It's still not quiet of course but the sound deadening definitely made a difference. It was well worth the effort. Taking care of several of the rattles in the cabinets and whatnot also makes a big difference cumulatively. _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust." |

So I'd like to get my radio working. I looked more closely at my original speaker and it seems I have a less common setup. It's 5.25" with a 2.5" magnet. The magnet has a cover on it with a recess in. A bracket on the speaker mount plate goes into that recess and holds the speaker into place. I've taken some pictures of the mounting area and the speaker itself.
Does anyone have an ideas of what I could replace this with? I was thinking I could get another 5.25" speaker and screw it to the plate if I had to but I'd much rather have one that fit the original mount. Anyone know what the Ohm rating would be on this speaker?
Here's a link to a NOS one that has been sold:
http://www.classiccult.com/vw-111035411.html
The speaker part number is: 111 035 411
The plastic ring part number is: 111 035 333
I have a 1 year only Blaupunkt Emden Radio:

It has several rips in it. I'm thinking this speaker is actually 4.5". I had measured the outside diameter before. _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust." |

You can get that speaker repaired or re-coned. Lot of places do it. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Get the speaker cone replaced then.
Contact any of the vintage radio repair shops in the classifieds or on the internet.
Here is one such from a search of the forums.

Had a place repair several stock speakers for us that was in Jackson Hole WY years ago. Came out great, and sounded perfect. Cost for each was about $30.00. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

That speaker is the normal (Westfalia) Hi-Fi speaker for '67. It had better sound with greater cone travel and more weight from the magnet. That black bracket comes out from behind the dash. Do you have the phillips screw in the top of the dash? |

Yep, I have the screw. The black speaker mount plate? I took it out a little while ago.
Do you know the ohm and wattage of this speaker?
