If it has been serviced it was before I owned it so you're right that it could probably use some extra love. Considering how long it sat it's been 30 years at least since the distributor had any work done, other than me cleaning it, setting the dwell and testing the vacuum can. It still has the ancient cap/rotor, points and condenser and all have worked perfectly since I got it! Pretty amazing really, the likely original coil is still good too!! I carry spares for all of that stuff just in case though.
I think in about a year I'm going to have this engine rebuilt (or do it myself) so at that time I will get the distributor refurbished as well. The plan for the engine is to get case savers installed, make it a 1600, and convert it to use a doghouse oil cooler. _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust." |

If it's never been fully disassembled, cleaned, inspected and re-oiled and greased, it needs it to work 100% and not put too much pressure on the vacuum can due to a sticky advance plate.

Thanks for the link. That came out looking beautiful! Maybe I'll tackle mine sooner rather than later. _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust." |

Thanks
You may also look for one of these as well. Your engine looks very stock and original. It would look even better with an original VW/Pierburg fuel pump vs. that aftermarket fuel pump.
Those aftermarket pumps w/out "C" clips have a tendency for the pivot pins to back out leaving you on the side of the road, broken down. Here's a pic of one that did it to me after I just bought my bus before I had a chance to yank it off and replaced it w/a Pierburg pump I rebuilt w/a nos kit.

I have the original pump like that one you posted, you can see it in the early pages of this thread. I rebuilt it when I first got the bus but there must be some mating surfaces that aren't right because I had a persistent fuel leak. They definitely look better than the aftermarket pumps, I agree. I also like that they have a built-in fuel filter.
I do carry a spare aftermarket pump that has the c clips in case that very problem occurs. While on one hand I would like to run the original style pump, one thing I prefer about the the aftermarket type is they have fewer failure points such as inlets/outlets that can pop out and potentially start a fire. Well, I guess they could break off but it is less likely. _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust." |

Where was the pump leaking at? Odd, I've rebuilt dozens of those Pierburg's and never experienced a leak. I'm assuming you used an aftermarket rebuild kit? _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

It leaked on the top if I remember correctly. It was a kit from WW. Honestly, even if I had a perfectly functioning one I'd probably still use the aftermarket type. Yes the OG ones look nice and are stout but I don't like pressed fuel fittings at all. Having one in my carb fall out was enough for me. That along with the other screwed seams, I'll probably stick with the ugly sealed variety. _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust." |

This bus turned 50 in January by the way!
I pulled the deck lid to flush out the internal rust flakes that annoy me every time I open it, I also cleaned it up some while it was out.
Blurry pic but I rerouted the cable so it doesn't rub:
Removed these from front bumper:

Ironic that you have a rare Safari specific Hirschmann Red Tip antenna and NO Safaris!

Pinetops,
I just read your entire thread. Your bus is awesome. It is unreal how great the condition is, and you are doing a fantastic job preserving the originality of the bus. Those brackets you removed from the front bumpers very much resemble the ground bars on a bucket truck. Is there copper underneath the white paint? |

Thanks BH! I feel lucky to own this bus.
I'm not sure, I will scrape some paint off and see if they are copper. _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust." |

When you have a chance, invest in a WW positive cable. The positive cable you have now with the battery clamp replacement clamped onto the end of the cable will be another corrosion spot due to the battery acid that will get out of the battery.
Also find a plastic battery box to catch battery acid. Can even cut it down to just a few inches tall, and long as it will contain the acid. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Pinetops,
Here is a photo of a ground bar on a bucket truck. These look like the same size as the brackets from your bumper. Who knows?
Thanks

E&B, I did notice a good amount of corrosion built up on that positive post when I pulled the battery out. I'll pick one up next time I make an order.
BH, you're right, it looks a lot like that ground bar. Now that I think of it, when I got the bus there was some very old, long, heavy duty cable under the bed. I wonder if that had something to do with the ground bars... It looked like it may have gone to radio equipment or something like that. _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust." |
