Thanks alot.... now I have to spend the rest of my night researching turbo stuff...

When you're ready let me know and I'll give you Dave's contact information. He is one of the smartest guys on the planet when it comes to turbo stuff.

PM me if you don't mind. I like the idea of a turbo, something tells me there is more adaptabel options opposed to a supercharger (just my guess) seems like I could use a turbo from just about anything as long as it's small.

Check out the trans, dont remember if yours used the tq converter/manual clutch set up like Desoto of that era. Dodge did but a bit earlier yrs.Your + would be rare to run into another one at a show, hope dash is ingood shape, most cars then did have really nice ones, not theplastic crap nowdays. With a fresh eng you could cruise with the traffic.

Yeah... Id give up the Vw's for a good solid 50's American Coupe...
On of my worst regrets .. was selling my ROCKET 88 - 50 Olds 2 door Sedan..
Oh well live and learn.. plus will own a 51 Merc (2 Door) that means more to me and my family anyway.. (My Pop and I resurrected it together from its bullet hole laden state)

Go for it.. and rock that flat head six...
Too many swapped out for the big V8.. nice to be different.

Reality check, seller says he'll buy parts car, you will help him get it running again, then he will sell it to you for original asking price? Wrong, he'll want more for it or decide to keep it and all you've gained is some experience working on flatheads. Go in with your eyes open and if you're good with either outcome enjoy.

Flat sixes are cool..but henry did the flathead right..when tuned correctly the only sound it makes is the air rushing into the carb..

And the steam steadily escaping the raidator. Good heat.

It is not known for sure how much of the ford v-8 was designed by Henry.
Very little I think.

Straight eight is smooth too ya know, de-soto??

Two water pumps and they still ran hot..Ford did run engineering hard till about 1936,during Model A trials in 1927 and 28 he would take the prototypes out, abuse them till they broke return them to engineering and told them to start over..he almost put his dealer network out of business by delaying and refining the car during the changeover from the T..It was not uncommon for him to roam the Rouge Plant(the largest industrial complex in the world at the time) and shut down entire departments, regardless of production demands because it needed cleaning or he saw something he didn't like..Ford roof lines remained high till 1948,the year of his death..he wouldn't allow a car to be designed that a normal man couldn't get into comfortably with his hat on..

True.. Flathead Ford V8's, have an inherent heating of the cast thanks to long exhaust passages and the shared center exhaust.. port... but..
Flathead Fords/Mercury's V8's main issue of quick heating is due to amount of coring sand left in the blocks..
Once you get all that crap out.. they stay cool as a cucumber..
Its not uncommon to dig 2-4 quarts of sand from the block cavities.

Its also why some ran hot.. and some didnt.
Some sand washed out better than others.

More sand = less coolant..

We run a tweaked and pumped Flathead Merc.. daily..

You can crank a good running Flatty rpm's down so low.. you can count the fan blades.
Smooth and quiet when they right..

you don't think your sand might be a by product of some intrepid sort filling the rad with river water back in the day?

VW studied the Rouge at this time..they copied a bunch of Ford techniques..
