Happens a lot, especially since back in the 70's a running engine was a cheap and easy swap. My engine is actually a VW/Audi replacement, but it's a good one.

Most likely used to say 1300 for the engine size.

Badge was 1300. That would have been the og engine size. Great little car. Mines a 63 too. They are a neat year. As I've found ordering parts they have the last of the early ghia stuff on them.

What are your plans. Body off resto or get it driving and enjoy?

More picts of the cool a/c under the dash. Is it dualport motor. I think the 1300 badge was 66 only.

It could be a decklid from '66. It would be plausible for a 66 decklid to be part of a repair at sometime in its life.

Brain fart, 1200 would have been original size for 63. Your dash looks spree 66 to me. Do you have a hazards flasher left of the steering wheel? What kind of door pulls do you have on the inside. The door mounted mirror makes me think 64-65.

Ghias never came with a 1300 badge. That spot would have had a VOLKSWAGEN script on it. Body looks very 1963 to me - last year of those front turn signals. The four-lug wheels are a mystery though.

Is that true for all Ghias, or just U.S. spec Ghias?

I found this image posted in the gallery here by Ghia forum regular pbaptist which shows the 1300 badge on a 1966 Karmann Ghia:

That particular Ghia features the rare Teak interior package, and I believe it may belong to Patrick (pbaptist), so perhaps if he happens to see this thread he can comment on the 1300 badge and its authenticity.

That photo also shows a single reverse light on the rear bumper? That was not a feature on a '66 either. I honestly cannot speak to the authenticity of that car, not from a US standpoint (euro bumper too), but I don't think its a good example of an original US spec car. Either way, the vehicle in question is definitely not a 66 anyway. The main giveaways from the photos is the 65 and older dash (ash tray) and the 63 and older front turn signals (screw-on bezels).

Agreed - the car in question is clearly not a '66.

As often happens, I'm afraid that I'm heading a bit off the original topic of the thread by questioning the use of a 1300 badge on non U.S. spec Karmann Ghias.
There's just so much to learn about these cars, and when an opportunity presents itself to pull out a pearl of Ghia trivia I'm afraid I just can't resist asking these off-topic questions. Embarassed

Perhaps the 300 badge indicates the Ghia in question is a previously unknown rare Spartan edition?

the 300 badge was definitely a 1300, I can see where the 1 broke off..

does the AC or the steering wheel help locate the year,, I haven't seen any with either in pictures I have looked at

and can someone confirm, the image I posted with the VIN and engine code to verify I have those years correct

more pics of AC and doors and floor

only major rust I have found is the floorpans,, and gonna need new bumpers
and in the 300 pic,, it shows another hole over to the side, so the tag was longer I suppose

You'll see what you should have in place of the "300" badge here Wink http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=603985

That A/C, who is it made by? I don't think they came from the dealer that year with an A/C option. It would be cool (no pun intended) to install one of those on my Ghia. Good luck with this build. It really reminds me of how my Ghia was when I got it Smile. Too bad that the A/C system was shot, and missing a lot of pieces. Also, any luck of to why it is 4 lug? One bus I found had a 4 lug hub in the back for no reason...
