Has any body used a different heater core for the rear.
A search on amazon, yielded some other core that would eliminate the need for the leak prone valve.

Ready-Aire / Vista-Pro 0399022 Heater Core by Ready-Aire http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000CH1HNK/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_3Hq7tb1ZAQVRK
I like to order one to see how it compares or if there's a way to make it work

The PO of my 9 passenger used something else that was the same size and had the right size fittings. no valve any more unless I want to put in a ball valve. He said he was at a FLAPS and just thumbed through a catologue 'till he found one that looked right and ordered it. Same price as an after market OEM style one though. No issues running it and it pumps out the heat.

It would be great to find one that could be controlled by a remote thermostat... probably pricey.

I'm sure you could rig up a push/pull cable pretty easy to a ball valve.

Usually you just turn it on for the winter and off for the summer though. I haven't found it necessary to adjust the temp either, the fan speed adjustment works fine.

I leave mine on all the time and add a valve to the front one to close it completely on the summertime

I have wanted to eliminate the stock under seat heater and add a heater between the two front seats that blows to the rear. This would give way better heat to the back seat area than the stock one that just blows against whatever luggage or cargo that has been stored under the seats.

Another option would be to move the under seat heat off to the right side of the vehicle so it wouldn't get blocked off quite so easily.

So you have or can see a part number by any chance?
I have the dimension of the stock core and I could compare to others

Its much easier just to fix the valve. This is one of about 20 things I do
on every new vanagon I own. I take the valve off, take it apart and seal
it with silicone. Then clean up the o-ring area and reinstall it, sealing with
silicone also. On all my water cooled vanagons and everyone I've ever
done like this, not one has ever leaked since.

Does the silicone still allow the valve to operate? Without leaking? Or do you simply put the valve in one position and silicone it in place permanently?

I thought they leaked from the o ring under the plug, so i got a new plug and O ring?

Yes , the valve operates fine. Although, most of the leaks I've found are
at the o-ring attaching it to the heater. May want to try just this first.

Mine leaked from the pivot in the middle of the valve. I replaced it with the one from Rocky Jennings and couldn't be happier with it.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=584562

What's your time worth? $10? $20? $25 per hour?

The price difference between an unknown, "whatever they send you from Amazon" (since the reviews indicate you will NOT receive what's shown in the picture) and the genuine replacement is $65.

How much time will you invest into...

...finding the right fittings.
...purchasing the right fittings (time on internet/drive to parts store)
...rigging up a part that isn't the same size to fit the available space
...installing the part securely. (anything above thirty minutes is extra work)

Most of all, is knowing that you have the right part worth anything? The original core in mine held up for thirty years. This one may be fine for that long, too, but "rear heater core failure" is waaaaaaaaaaay down on my List of Things that will Ruin Our Vacation.

I have purchased lots of VW/Audi parts from Hansauto..and some parts for my two Daughter's Audi A6 C4.and 1990 VW Cabriolet. If I have a problem, Peter..the owner..is quick to fix the issue with the correct part or refund.

Most of his parts are from China or suppliers in Europe..the quality is about the same as everyone else.

Got a brand new $76!! Vanagon 251959455M radiator fan from Hansauto that sells for a mind blowing $450 from everyone else (at the time..new from VW now $180) back in June 2012..The Hansauto fan works just fine.

In that it is a rear heater core and you don't have to pull the dashboard out to install it like the front heater core..spend the $14 and let us know how it goes?

My van didn't come with a rear heater (pulled long ago by one of the previous 4 owners). So I installed this one:

http://www.princessauto.com/pal/en/Auxiliary-Heating/24700-BTU-12V-Auxiliary-Heater/4240028.p

It works brilliantly; a nice, gentle, wafting heat, and plenty of it. Easily reaches the front of the van. It has 3 speeds just like the stock unit, and wires right in to the Vanagon harness.
