Kevin
I have had good results using a thread file to clean up abused threads.
I'm a little surprised how often I use it, now that I have it.
One other nice thing about them is that they don't care if the threads are left handed.

If you don't have a thread file, use a triangle jewlers file.

Obvious question but I have to ask it, you are using a right hand thread nut? Sometimes they get mixed up easily.

Figured I'd go ahead and do one for you.

Here's a crusty candidate. Granted it doesn't have crossed threads but it is as bad and will be as hard as if it did.

Here's how to chuck it up and insert the blade. You must have already figured all that out if you made your own.

Just pick how many cuts you want and go for it.

I made this one with six cuts.

Gently start it on. I use magnifiers to see if it's going straight.

Then start turning in 1 to 1/2 turn and back up a smidge if it gets tight before going farther but don't be afraid to go for it. You can go dry or use oil. I chose to go dry just to prove a point that it will cut.

After not long I was all the way in.

It was so clean I could back off the nut by hand.

All ready to clean up and go.

If you want I'll send you this nut as it's the same side as you but it's for a '67 as long as that's good for you.

paint some muriatic acid on that poor thing before you do your thread repair and it will not clog up so bad. then neutralise with baking soda

You should also be using WD40 or something similar when you're re-cutting the thread. A few turns on, then back it off, clean any swarth off, then a few more turns, back it off, clean swarth....... Over & over until you're done.

True all that ^^^^ guys.

I was just showing the guy with the stripped spindle that he could carefully chase his thread dry or wet if he went slow using the Jypsy die.

I second this, it's a brilliant simple solution. Great pictures and nicely written up too.

I prefer to use actual cutting oil for stuff like this although I have used PB Blaster too.

Great photo tutorial above, thanks for posting that.

Hey Barry, wasn't trying to rain on you..... Smile

It is an excellent tutorial and great close up photos. Also, my bad because I didn't read your post properly and missed you saying you could use oil or go dry.....

Smile Cool

Just buy a die.

15 bucks on Ebay. I bought one a couple years ago, worked great. Also, you don't need the special giant die holder, you can just use vice grips or channel locks.
