Sorry for the sappy post, but I'm on cloud 9. I've had my 66 for about 2 months. It was in kind of rough shape. Pulled the engine, rebuilt it, installed it, and rewelded clutch cable tube. Finally today, I got the carb tuned in and drove it to pick the kids up from school (my wife was very nervous)!!!
I know this doesn't compare to some of the major projects on here, but this was my first engine rebuild. Thanks for all the help I've gotten on here.

I actually drove it on a 60 mile round trip yesterday, took it to a VW car show!!!! Not bad.
Had some stalling/ carb issues coming home. Just cleaned the carb this morning. Seems to be idling OK now. I think my vol. cont. screw is messed up.
I noticed a pretty bad shimmy at around 45MPH. I think I need to look into that.
Just want to get it mechanically sound this year.
Need new rubber seals, etc. But that's all part of the journey!!! _________________ Bill

Shimmy at 45 might be just rear tire balance |
Did you mean "front" tire balance?
I agree with Grandpa Pete. Get your front tire balance checked. It wouldn't be a bad idea to lift the front end up off the ground and check all your tie rods and especially your steering damper.
Shimmy start with out of balance (and out of round) tires and worn steering components exasperate the condition by allowing it to make the steering wheel shimmy. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Well I balanced the front tires last night with beads. Didn’t help the wobble. There were no weights on the wheels. The tires are in great shape, just old (no dry rot or weird wear patterns).
I might try swapping the front and rears tonight. The damper seemed to be working, I didn’t take it off yet. _________________ Bill

Balanced with beads? You're best bet is to get them balanced with wheel weights. I've never seen any of those products you insert in your tire to balance them work, if that's what you used. When I use to balance tires on the cars for a living back in the 80's, fix a flat was still popular. I can't tell you how bad tires were out of balance with that loose fluid being in the tires. I'd have to take the tires off the rim, fix the puncture correctly and remove the fluid. Then they would balance correctly.
On the steering damper, you need to un-hook one side and push/pull it through to check the resistance. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Yeah, I know, the beads seemed kind of crazy, but seems to have good reviews. I have my own tire changer, just couldn't find a way to balance without buying the adapter.

Maybe they didn't work for me. I'll find out after I swap the rears to the front. It might not be a tire issue at all. _________________ Bill

Congratulations. Did the stalling issue return? Check the fuel screen in the tank? Drain the sludge from the tank? Replace the short rubber hose from the tank to the long metal fuel line? They can kink when old and swell without giving any outward sign. Don't forget the other end of the long metal line, back by the clutch adjustment.
With an unknown fuel delivery system in a new project, I like to elevate the front wheels a bit and see if a two-liter soda bottle will gravity fill at the fuel pump inlet hose without any slowdowns. Examine the gas to see if it is all the same color. Any stratification and you should flush the tank by removing the sock and outlet pipe to get at the layer of sludge that never gets into the outlet pipe. |
