Hello,

Bought me a Westfalia hearse 2 weeks ago

Collected it in Germany after a long ride and decided t was a worthy candidate for a resto with a twist

The idea is to restore it to standard and put a foldable bed in it to sleep in

It will be painted two tone in the colour sheme white beige / titan red like the early buses

They ony deviation from stock will be an early rear window from a pré 64 standard bus grafted in the rear big lid

That will get a rear safari window kit from Creative Engineering installed to get me some needed fresh air

It will be installed in a way the lid can be rebuild to OG if I ever want too

A photo of how I bought it

I deided to do a ful reso int since all 4 corners had some bondo on it

The windows were removed and the waistline trim stripped

Behing each riveted hole of the trim I found a lot of rust - those areas will be blasted to remove all rust

The trim itself will be polished - the seals will be reproed by extrusion

All rust cut out an replced with fresh metal

The greyish paint is actually a rust inhibitor

Inside there is some small tubing welded in to prevent the sides from flexing during welding and sanding

The roof gutter is cleaned with a wire brush - note the watering hole in the gutter

I removed the frame - it a rather simple frame

I grinded of the welded on nose wheel support - it revealed it's chassis number underneath

The top cellast mount I had to cut out since rust spreaded the u-plate - this wil be made from new tubing and welded in

The frame with the wheels and trailing arms will be acid dipped before painting in Industrial chassis black

All bolts and hubs will be acid dipped and zinc plated

I bought some parts to restore this frame:

- New OG Westfalia shocks
- New trailing arm bushings
- New cellasto springs
- New hub bearings
- New nose wheel with a clamp and lock
- New tow hook assembly

I bought me bed in Ikea - good idea from my girlfriend

Instead of making one myself - modifying one

Fits like a glove !

I will put in a wooden floor to level out the coffing sliding rails - these actually are the big structure of the trailer

The middle area is actually wood covered with riveted on sheet metal

The bed itself will have it's legs shortened to gin some extra head room

Finshed the last corner

Removed the wooden floor and the rails - those will be replaced and some extra ones will be added

The parts are back from being acid dipped - those are rust inhibiter painted already in the photos

I decided to strenghten the frame + add some trailer foldable supports to each corner

Some camping spots don't allow to have the car in place so the trailer needs to be standing on its own

Lots of measuring and welding tubing to make sure all aligns and supports well

The frame is now ready to be painted in primer and be finished off in black before assembly with new parts

The big frame - trailing arms and wheels - 2 + 1 spare wheel

The rear end is sanded and the bare metal pieces are painted in rust inhibitor

Some education on the wheels

Those post '69 Westfalia trailers used Opel 12" tall 4" wide KPZ brand wheels

4 bolt type with nipple hubcaps from Opel as well

The Opel Cadett B to be correct

I will use Ravus brand white walls with an underlay and NOS hubcaps I found in The Netherlands

Some photos for further reference:

The shocks - uprated ones - not the regular ones - are still made for Westfalia and do have the same compressed and extended dimensions as OG

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The cellasto shocks - 600kg types - have 2 threaded studs - the caps can still be bought - note the special shaped big washer - these go on the trailing arm side

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The zinc-plated hubs with new SKF bearings and new dust seals

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The tow hook itself can be bought new from ALKO - the OG brand - 60mm type with the 3 holes - these match the holes in the tube and are the fixation of the stander as well

New teflon bushes for the trailing pieces - had the inners zinc-plated - new hardware

The washers I had lasercut and will fixate the body on the chassis in 10 points - OG it was 6 - 2 in front and 4 around the wheel wheels - 2 on each side

NEW Hella rear lights with new seals - new numberplate lights and new wiring with a Hella metal area correct plug - all these pieces are still made new by Hella

Small update

Had to replace the inner corner of the left front window

The upper half side is prepped with rust inhibitor

Installed the window to check how it fits

Note it's a different one with the palm leaf logo on the inside

Bought a full set earler this year in The Netherlands

Cut out the area where the body mounts / rests on the frame

These areas are always rusty - all 4 corners around the wheel whell enclosures will need replacing

Bought me these repro Westfalia Anhänger badges

These are recent repros with the horse embossed instead of the plain printed alu ones

The edges are in relief too
