So i painted my bug with rustoleum this weekend. Before everybody jumps on me about doing it with auto paint. ... I've never used a spray gun before and didn't know how it would turn out. With this I said well $500 worth of paint primer gun or 125$ total. Gun to paint and sand blocks. I'm impressed with my ability to lay paint. Kind of wished I used the right paint now but my body work isn't up to my liking. I'm my own worst critic. I knowi need another coat bit should I wet sand now or after. I thinned it50/50 with acetone and the dash looks like glass but the body shows the imperfections . I'm thinking thin it even more and it should fill the small spots and sand the major before the next coat. My steps were strip all moldings cut all weatherstripping around windows and sand with 220 on a da spot prime and shoot color. Overall or looks good but not great so should I sand now or after 2nd coat. |

Check the can to see about top coating & when. You could end up with a big wrinkled raisin if you are not careful. The issue with some of these products is they are designed to be applied & left. I understand the want to be perfect, (you might have thought that way from the start). Try a small test spot to see if it will take another coat. Take a little of your reducer on a rag and wipe a small spot, if it shows color the paint is not cured enough for you. Hope this helps. I would use 400 wet & try not to over thin the paint, it might try to lift off what you have on there. PM me if you want more help |

That's a lot of thinning 50/50 with acetone. I have sprayed some Tremclad, which is the Canadian equivalent, and I thinned it at most 25% with lacquer thinner. _________________ 1958 Karmann Ghia owner |

Yeah it was a lot but it layed out super smooth and dried real quick. Today was mid 70 and low humidity so I did 2nd coat. Came out great. Going to let it harden for at least a week before I touch any thing on it. I'm dying to drive it againbut don't want to rush it. I will never paint a car again. This was a total pain in the ass. Rebuild the motor, sure. Rebuild the transmission sure. Rebuild the brakes front end whatever sure. Paint a car f no. Divorce and paint jobs are expensive because they are worth it. |

Not a fan of non original color that came on the car, but that seemed to turn out pretty damn decent. Good job man. You spraying a clear over it? _________________ Gotta give my props to:

I probably should being it's rustoleum after all. If I wet sand it flat then clear coat then wet sand it again and polish it should be pretty close. Grainger sells rustoleum clear 39$ for a gallon. I figure I should stick with rustoleum so I don't have any issues with the paint not taking to the clear. I'm going to post more pics of the car out doors. Still can't figure out how to tie them to my post though. |

Look into putting hardener into rustoleum. I've been messing around with that, and it seems to work pretty well. |

That looks a lot better than I was imagining when I read the first post. To go to all that work, I agree, it is too bad you didn't use a 2K paint, be it single stage or base + clear.
*If* you could use a 2K clear on top, you'll get a lot more durability and wouldn't have to worry about stuff like a drippy gas nozzle ruining your paint job.
Maybe you could do a test on something to see if it would work. |

Car had no rust. Big plus. Very little body work needed. Bigger plus. Replaced engine cover and rear fender for $40. Another plus. Totally stripped down car to shell. Used random orbit with 220 grit to knock down what shine was left then sanded whole car with foam sanding blocks from depot. Spot primed filler and bare spots with rattle can. Wiped whole car down with acetone and sprayed away. I already have the new window seals. Need to order a body gasket kit from jbugs and get a new windshield. I broke it removing it. Still want to do another coat before assembly and possible clear |

Put 3 coats of that $39/gallon clear on it or you will regret it! _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

Looks good in the photos, but please, be careful and make sure the clear is compatible before doing anything!!! If it's not compatible it could wrinkle or ruin the finish. Rustoleum cures from the outside inwards through solvent evaporation, so just spraying something over it may trap in those fresh, uncured solvents. DEFINITELY DO NOT SPRAY A CATALYZED CLEARCOAT OVER THE RUSTOLEUM. This would likely cause a compatibility disaster, as a catalyzed paint should only be sprayed over a known cured surface (oem or cured urethane auto paint)
Even though the Grainger Clear Coat you mentioned says Rustoleum on the can, the clear might be part of a different system of Rustoleum paints, perhaps their industrial line or something like that (they make a lot of products besides the ubiquitous rattlecans and quart/gallon cans you find at home depot).
Take a look at this thread from the "Jalopy Journal" Forums for further details about clear coating Rustoleum: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/clear-coat-rustoleum.381388/ _________________ "I paid 2000 for my MR2 with the back quarters rusted out, 900 for the bug. below are picture of my 73 standard with rustoleum paint job, sunrise red, with a clear coat
a couple layers of sunrise red (sanded a few high spots) and a couple more of clear coat. wet sanded the clear coat with 1200 grit and them used meguiars ultimate compound then waxed the whole car
even with dirt on it, it still shines

Thanks for these posts folks, this looks like a perfect plan for my beater bug. I don't want to invest a ton on paint but it would be nice if it were all one color. |

8 months and I still haven't wet sanded mine. It did dry rock hard though. If anybody else is planning this and wants to mix colors to create a custom, make sure you keep a record of your ratios. I believe mine was 7 parts royal blue and one part silver. Also could be navy blue, I am sure the home depot by me only sells one of them in quarts so it should be easy to find out. Unless they sell them both now. |
