PostPosted: Sun Aug 17, 2014 9:04 pm    Post subject: Project Black 55 Vert Reply with quote

I've been itching to build an early vert. When I first set out on the search I was looking for 58-63 but what I came across is this 1955. This 55 Body was switched some 25+ years ago to its donor pan.. IRS 1970 so I know that is not correct but I'm completely OK with that. Every car I build is a custom so when I found this one I was pleased to snag it up as I wouldn't feel terrible switching things up with custom suspension and a cool new look. The body work and paint was done some 20+ years ago and the car was tucked away and never finished. I purchased it just like this minus the wheels. I've never built an early vert so this will be a major learning lesson. Below are the pics of my inventory session of what came with the car and I'm hoping if any of you knowledgeable folks see something that is the wrong year or wrong about this car let me know as I'm stepping into this one blind.

Here are a couple things I noted...
Front fenders don't have bullet turns or drain tubes under neath
Pan is obviously 4 lug and there are adapters on there right now
Plan is to change to 4 corner disk brakes so no biggie
One headlight is different than the other not sure which would be correct
P.O. said that one of the chrome window sashes was from a later car??

Anyways let me know what you think and if you can offer some identification of parts and whatnot.

Joel

Hood crest, hinge covers, large fuseblock and headlight starting with sb19 is wrong year. I don't remember the cut off for the ribbed verses non door handles. I think because you have over rider holes the non ribbed. Maybe someone else can chime in. Most of your parts are correct except what you mentioned.

You'll want to keep the "ribbed" window winder for your '55.

#1, Get rid of those plastic hood spring covers, you're car should use a hood prop.

#2, The hi/lo switch will work (it's a 1956-60 style), but a pre '55 would be round shaped

#3, the brake reservoir is a 1956-60 style. A 1953-55 type is attached with bolts

#1, Horn is Hella circa 1961-67

#2, You only need 1 exhaust tip (if you are running a 36hp)

#3, rear view mirrors looks to be 1958-64

Good news, You have the proper 1953-55 deck lid. So the small 1956-60 spring wont work for you.

What a great car. And that paint still looks great after all those years being tucked away.

Those "tailpipes" are Split-Bus tailpipes (one-year-only for the 1959 model year 36hp engine). You should be able to sell those in the classifieds. You need a longer single straight Beetle tailpipe (up through Aug 1955 style) if you'll be running a "correct" 36hp engine. Something tells me you won't be though...

I'm betting the front fenders are aftermarket and just didn't have holes cut for any signals. The shape around the headlights looks flatter than it should be, plus I've had several front fenders just like those that never had any holes.

Thanks for all the helpful notes. I was thinking the same thin for the front fenders. For the tailpipes you right I'll be listing them up as I'll likely be putting a stroked motor in it.. only time will tell. Here are a couple items I have no clue on where they go...
These clips I have no clue..

On these switches.. are the ones on the left wiper and don't know what the ones on the right would be. Also where should their proper location on the dash be?

The oh crap handle doesn't have an insert in it.. is it supposed to be rubber and what to do here are there aftermarket options?
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

On the side of the backrest arm there is two screw holes.. any idea?

Oh snap man nice car. Shocked And black at that! It would be really hard not to run that car with a stock look but with updated running gear & brakes to go with that IRS pan. Cool

Thanks.. Not to get ahead of myself or this thread but these are my two top choices for wheel selection.

Also back to the deck lid spring comment... what should the correct spring look like?

The switches on the Right are your interior light switch. Mounted under the dash, just the Left of the steering column. Car only requires 1

I've been accumulating some bits and pieces to start the build and it's time to start thinking about top and interior. I'm wondering if some of you Northwest guys have a shop to recommend for the Vert Top Installation. Also would consider allowing the shop to tackle the interior as well if the price is reasonable.. but the top is something I definitely don't want to tackle myself. Thanks
