Nice job!
Make sure you have your charging idiot light when the key is to the on position. If it is burnt out, you will not get any charging to the battery! _________________ 64 No'back Speedster "Pearl"

ah... VR could be bad. You can check the voltage right off the generator to see if it is the Gen or the VR. _________________ 64 No'back Speedster "Pearl"

With the engine running, use a wooden stick to push on the generator brushes, to make sure they're seated and making contact with the commutator. Also make sure the commutator is clean and shiny.
When I bought my Square the brushes had just been replaced, but after about a month the commutator got dirty and the light came on. Turned out the brushes were some really soft compound that clogged the slots in the commutator. A good cleaning and some new brushes and it was just fine. _________________ 71 Elm Green FI A/T Squareback |

it looks new(er), but no telling since this car hasn't been on the road since 98. With a little poking around and not actual testing im thinking its bad too. It has 12V in, but not out.
i'll do some more wire tracing and try to get some actual numbers. _________________ Mario De Leon

Another cause of failure after replacing brushes is a worn commutator without the needed grooves between contacts:

Do you have a Bentley? Either Brown or Blue? If so, the generator testing proceedure is in it. It's also in the bug version of the Bentley as well.
But, for a quick test, you can pull the belt off (disconnect the battery 1st), and hook up a set of jumper cables to the generator (neg terminal to ground, battery + to the D+ post, the generator should turn over like a motor. If it doesn't, you'll need to remove the generator and go thru it.
I only say that, as I've found that IF it won't run like a motor (polarizing test), then there's usually something wrong with the generator itself. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I do have a Bentley, thumbed through it a few times already.
So there's 4 wires at the regulator,
one from the battery
one to the generator, D+
one to the idiot light
and one from DF to DF
which wire sends voltage back to the battery from the generator? _________________ Mario De Leon

so if I unplug D+ at the generator and get 4V, is that a generator issue? I get 0V at D+ on the regulator. _________________ Mario De Leon

You'll have to ask someone smarter than me. I know IF you remove the belt and the existing wires from the generator, and use a set of jumper cables, you can make the generator spin like a motor, or it won't do anything. If it's the later (not doing squat), then it needs rebuilding. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I didn't test the generator yet,but I did replace the regulator. The light is now dimly lit with the key in the off position. When I start the engine and light does not come on but the battery isnt charging either.
I guess i will take the generator off tomorrow and replace the brushes and test it _________________ Mario De Leon

The kit took about a hour to install, would've been quicker if it came with instructions. One of the studs has to be removed and replaced with a bolt for the bracket. The battery now reads 14.0V at idle and about 14.5 at about 2000 rpm.
As far as "drivability" issues, I think im done.only thing left is a couple of trim pieces and some interior stuff.
What do I do after it s done??? get another project and start over? _________________ Mario De Leon
